How to remove rust in the bore?

My rifle has some pretty bad rusting in the bore about an inch from the muzzle, but the rest of the bore is excellent. What’s the best way to remove rust from a barrel? I tried soaking barrel in bore cleaner and running copper brush through hundreds of times but it didn’t touch it
 
Paraffin called by Americans kerosine sometimes works well. Depending on the type of rust. Put a rag soaked sopping wet with paraffin into the muzzle where the rust is. Leave for twenty-four hours then try your copper brush.

Have you left the moderator on?
 
First wrap some suitably sized flannel around a cleaning jag that allows enough room for a layer of medium-fine production paper. Once you have, by trial & error, arrived at a not too tight or lose contact with the bore, add some oil and commence a series of passes with the cleaning rod until the desired result is achieved.

I'm convinced you could also achieve this by getting a good fit with the bore using only flannel/cloth and JB Bore Compound.

Alternatively, lose an inch from the barrel and have it re-crowned. Threaded too if you must!

Ah, yes, but no. I also swear by it.

However it does tend to seem to draw out the carbon from the metal to its surface. I used it on the rusty lockplate and spring of an 1853 rifled musket that was immersed in Evaporust with the spring in position in the cocked position and the spring was found next morning snapped. Which it hadn't done at any previous cockings, or being left cocked, off and on, in any the four days previous.

Google Evaporust and carbon and there's some useful info. Such as:

The black film is carbon from the steel. Steel is composed of a combination of carbon and iron. In certain instances, steel will darken in color after rust has been removed from the surface of the metal. This is a natural phenomenon that chemists refer to as “carbon migration”. The carbon from the steel moves, or “migrates”, to the outer layer of the metal and settles into the pores.
The removal of the rust (iron oxide) reduces the proportion of iron to carbon, leaving a higher concentration of carbon on the outer surface. This heavier layer of carbon could cause a darkening of the metal due to the attributes of the carbon. The darkening does not have an adverse affect on the metal. It merely represents the movement of carbon from the interior of the metal to the exterior of the metal.

Since Evapo-Rust® is a highly effective rust remover, it stimulates the carbon migration process. Evapo-Rust®is not alone in creating the carbon migration effect. Other rust removal treatments will also result in carbon migration and a darkening of the metal. The primary difference between Evapo-Rust® and the acid based treatments is that Evapo-Rust® will not harm or weaken the metal. Unlike other treatments, Evapo-Rust® will not darken products made with low carbon steel.

With Evapo-Rust®, sometimes a wiping with a dry cloth or a more rigorous buffing can remove the dark coloring. A quick rinsing of the metal after Evapo-Rust® has been applied may also keep the carbon from settling into the pores of the metal.

There are several things that can be tried to minimize the effects of carbon migration. First, high carbon parts should not be soaked longer than necessary. Once the rust has been removed, the parts should be rinsed and dried. Second, a further dilution of the Evapo-Rust® formula may have a positive affect. The lower concentration of Evapo-Rust® will take longer to remove the rust, but may have less of an effect on causing the carbon migration.

Best way to remove it is chop the end off the barrel! However if it’s still shooting well then i wouldn’t bother. Usually in the region of £100 for a chop and screw cut

I believe what you're referring to is paraffin lamp oil (which is a highly refined version of kerosene).

I think that plus gas has a kerosene base, might be worth a try?

Yes. Sort of. There's the sort that forms big scabs on top of the metal and then the sort that seems like a coating of instant coffee powder. Or that's how I differentiate them. Scabbing rust and powder rust. A sort of a wet type and a sort of a dry type.

I’ve really went to town on it today trying to get the rust out, is it possible if it won’t come off, the rust has just left staining behind? All cleaning patches are coming through white not a speck of brown on them
