Animal Transit Boxes

Anyone on here seen the Animal Transit boxes, the kind of concept of that I know there's a few brands thats the just one I seem to come across the most online, the plastic style sort of gun drawer system for truck beds ect with extras like the cages for your Gundog ect ? Im wanting a project for myself and this interests me a lot, wondering if anyone on here has had that same idea and done it themself, im a crafty guy and know my way around tools including myself so I think this is a plausible project for me. Wondering if anyones done it and the cost they roughly worked it out at ? If the cost of materials is reasonable to do it myself I will, if it's going to be £200 more to buy a proper setup then I wouldn't bother. Trying to source the material thats used of these things but it seems incredibly expensive for what is just plastic sheeting. Cheers Gus

I made a dog box using the same materials and methods as the Animal Transit boxes, to fit the back of my daughter's Jimny.
It wasn't difficult. Took the whole of one afternoon and part of the night to complete, including designing it in the first place.
Not sure I'd want to attempt gun drawers etc, but a fitted dog box is well within the capability of anyone who's reasonably handy with tools.

Think Id maybe even just have one drawer, free the other side up for anything else I want to use it for, defo a bit complicated but I don't think its out the reach of me if I did say soo myself

Might give a look at 80/20 extrusions. There's a plethora of attachments like roller bearings, tie down plates, etc. made specifically for 80/20. If your take you time and plan things out, 80/20 can help you fab out some seriously well built things.

A lot of the commercially available trunk safes/boxes are made from the same 80/20 stock.

We used it a lot with the kids, back when I mentored a robotics team at the local high school. The 80/20 worked well until they could be certified/tested to run a CNC mill or lathe. Pretty crazy to see 14-18 yo's these days, programming g-code and Arduinos, as well as designing robots, but we are in the 21st century....

Like this?

I did it all myself, probably cost about £400 with wood, runners and raptor liner. There's things I'd change about what I did. But so much cheaper and I made it to how I wanted it.

Got plenty more photos if interest and can provide links to the draw runners.

Think for me I would want to go for the plastic over the wood really just for the ability to wash or clean it and run no risk of it rotting. Wouldn't mind a link to the runners though cheers

I would also recommend you consider beefing up the leaf springs in your truck (if that is what you have). I did something similar to mine, and it was fine the first 3-4 yrs. But by year 5, the back was starting to sag a bit from the constant extra weight on the rear bed. Especially if you have a shell over the bed as well.

Mine had two sliding long drawers, with the top being flat (covered in automotive carpet), so if I wanted to camp out over night, I could just roll out a sleeping bag, and crack the side vent window on the shell. Also put a locking hasp on the inside, so I could lock myself in at night, and someone couldn't just open up the shell while I was sleeping. Worked out well, even when camping along the US/Mexico border (which could be a bit dodgy at times; and yes, I slept with a pistol under my pillow).

With the raptor liner it's plenty water proof enough for me. So much so, I left one drawer outside over night and it rained, it filled up like a bath! Agreed plastic wouldn't rot away, but it's a bugger to work with, at least with the tools I've got.

Runners are made by a company called Vevor, lock in and out, bit of a pain that both lock, so you need two hand to open or close the drawers, but its only a minor niggle

I had this done by Sampson ltd, cost around £1400. Decided I wanted the ability to remove one side so I could get wood or tray in. So only had a panel that bolts in made, the panel is only in really during the shooting season, whilst working the dogs to separate them. Left panel removable, dog crate on top of draw is easily removed also but always left in. Drawer was made to accommodate plastic clip boxes to have everything organised.
