Wanted: .338 Lapua Magnum Rifle

Does the 300 burn out the barrel too quickly? I already bought some Lapua 300grn heads unfortunately....

What is your preferred recipe of components?
In a 26” barrel i could run 250gr lapua lockbase at a little over 3150fps
Single hole stuff at 100m
Predictable beyond where my skills ran out

With the 300gr Lapua and Sierra my MV dropped to below 2800fps
Pressure spikes felt between cold and warm days
Groups at zero ranges were “meh”
Where I noticed the difference was at range where the data simply didnt match the BC (known MV, Environmentals etc)
And the predicted velocity at longer range was very low and I couldn’t repeat the accuracy in similar wind conditions

If you can run them at 3000, have at it. Different kettle of fish
The trade off is ELD-M in 285gr form
If you can get the velocity out of them they have a slight edge on 250s

But they are more expensive and I dont see the pro rata advantages

Hi all,

just testing the waters to see if anyone has a .338 Lap Mag rifle they are thinking of selling. I have the slot already, just not purchased one yet, mainly due to the nicest rifles being very pricey! I would love an AI or Cadex if I could.

Looking for something more financially viable. I have been eyeing up a Savage 110 Precision as it's already in an MDT chassis. Can anyone comment on Savage performance in this calibre?

Get a .300 NM. Better option if you have lowe budget and you can shoot it at bisley

Looks to be some, don't know much about them really other than they are nice rifles, just shame you can't get parts or mags for them anymore!

Had one (TAC 2 )

The most ergonomic stock ever - almost perfect, if forend design was longer

Action and chassis interact with galvic corrosion and required stripping fairly frequently if used in wet conditions (fixings also suffered from corrosion)

Rifle I had was extremely accurate and won a few comps with it (one of the first steel plate comps at WMS circa 2011 and small group at one of the Diggle Egg (or Prarie dog shoots around the same time )

The rifle was tested for use in the UK sniper teams and failed some of the tests

One of the major issues was the trigger actuator if dirty could be over ridden causing the bolt to be closed with firing pin forward on a live round (that’s the pin that is exposed at the rear upper surface of the action when the bolt assembly is slid rearwards)

The other being of the mag was dirty the weapon could also fire on bolt closure

These issues are well documented elsewhere and effectively reduced the system to police (who rarely get weapons dirty and do their best not to use them ) use and enthusiastic amateurs who wanted something different

There was also the issue with the angled collets of the R93 on which the system is (or was based) with some documented injuries resulting from bolt close lock up failiure

My rifle functioned perfectly but whilst I liked the accuracy and ergonomics I decided to move away from what I believed was a potential flawed system that I used in all weathers killing a **** load of deer and spent a good deal of time keeping functional

Zero spare part availability unless you have a source and a system that has now been superseded by a revised design addressing the issues I mention

TSD member RT having a couple of set up shots with my now own Barrett circa 3-4 years ago.
We roughed up a bit of a target over in the paddock next to the house.
Btw I have (and mates) shot a schitt load of Sambar deer above the target tree.
David of JAK fame originally owned her.

Unusual choice and that’s great, not a system that’s seen much,
I keep toying around with the idea of getting another one, still got my reloading gear for LM,
But all my spare cash is going into another project, maybe when this is completed 🤔

One of our Dutch members has a switch barrel Cadex , exspensive definitely but just stunning quality in fit and finish,

Whilst I do not want to...

Have you thought this through?

I only ask because I hadn't.

You have also used the phrase "financially viable" in your post - .338 ammunition is about £5/£6 a pop. That is the least of your worries.

Where are you going to shoot a .338? You flag up as London based - you are not allowed to shoot a .338 at Bisley.

You will have some distance to travel to a range that will accommodate this calibre.

If money and travel are not an issue, then knock yourself out.

I had a slot for a .338 and both money and travel are an issue for me. I swapped that slot for another .308 and bought an AI for long-range stuff.

Just a thought...
You can fire .338 at Bisley but only on specific days.

We generally get HME ranges but it’s 600mtrs
So hardly stretching a 338 legs,
But it’s still fun to use a boomer, and I shoot for fun !
Once my current project is completed I’ll cast and eye ,
We’re on serial 45 on the 24th , but been asked to only engage targets at 800 and out if using a 338 etc, ?

You can fire .338 at Bisley
Bisley typically uses 900-1000 for the specific .338 days. Gardners Guns at Eskdalemuir go out to 1km 1mile and up to 2 miles on different days. Given the way the wind comes across the range the difference between two shots at a mile can be significant.
Orion in Wales is happy with.338s out to something like 1500m and FCSA has several other military ranges available.
If you can shoot a couple times at Bisley, and the others mentioned above you probably need a mortgage for the ammunition.

If anyone is still after one of those I've just seen a 338 trg going in the Lonsdale s auction this coming weekend, hope this helps somebody 🤔

Yep you can’t just rock up at Bisley and start shooting !
That all stopped years ago, which was why I sold my first AWSM ,
And for some reason only know to the camp commander at Lydd he’s given us full field firing usage!
Think we’ve one member with a 50cal !
