Roe Buck Heads...

No, I really mean 'heads'...

Nothing special; just a couple of memories from this year's Roe Buck season.

I was lucky enough to take five Roe Bucks this season, (no skill involved, just happenstance).

For no particular reason that I can articulate, I kept two of the heads. I am very lucky to have a pal - that sentence could end there...

...I am very lucky to have a pal, who delights in preparing my heads for me. Just as well. I have no clue how to go about it.

He recently located down to the South West of the UK, and so consequently, the logistics are a wee bit more convoluted.

Today his (charming) wife, said she was up in 'town' - and could I put the kettle on?

She had the prepared Roe heads for me; and whilst she was here, could she take some of the Red, Sika and Fallow heads (that I had been storing for them) back down to the South West.

Deal!

They are nothing 'special' but they do tell a story.

Same 'Estate' - I would estimate same age - just interesting to see the difference in the antlers.

They now have pride of place in the "Snug'...

...until about 0745 hours tomorrow when Mrs.62 sees them...

The story makes them special. And the memories compound that. I'm not a trophy hunter. I primarily stalk to provide us with ethical, sustainable, and guilt-free meat. I do however, have a deep appreciation of the aesthetic appeal of antlers, and keep each pair from every buck I shoot. Most are poor or unremarkable, and in such cases I keep the antlers for sticks, knife handles, and such.

Some though, leave a deep enough impression that makes them very important to me. Some are a first with a new rifle. Some were taken after a memorable stalk. Some are just superb heads. I've forgotten many of the bucks I've shot. And I remember very few does. All the bucks I display though, have a story. And each time I look at them, the memories come back.....

The stag ballroom is quite impressive. As was the amount of dust when we were told to clean it, many years ago.
