Trailer to carry fallow

I have come to the conclusion that putting a fallow onto my Heck Basket, just isn’t going to work. Munties and Roe, no problem, fallow, not a friggin chance, not unless someone is with me to give me a hand. And they ain’t goin in the boot. She has spoken.

So, I’m going to go down the trailer route, I have an electric winch and a battery, so I can bolt it all together.
My question is, what is the smallest trailer I can get away with? One of those Erde trailers? 4x3 box?
I have only shot a couple of fallow. 50kg was the biggest so far. The last one was about 30kg. I need to keep it as compact as possible due to storage.

Yep they work very well, erde 102 will work fine a slightly longer one is better, and if you can get one with the extension bars on top for a higher internal area no need to top and tail fallow straight in and covered 👍 I just bolted the winch on behind the trailer where the and on a spare wheel carrier is and run it through, all you need is a bit of alloy sheet and 2 bits 50x50 to make a slide and you're home and dry, to stop the trailer tipping if not on the tow bar a trailer support jocky pole bolted up near the tailboard will stop it tipping on you
good luck, i think you will be surprised how easy they can be pulled around and loaded up

My last fallow buck was 70 kg larder weight, the biggest prior to that 75 kg. Most prickets seem to be in the range 40-50 kg and does 40-45 for me. Trust me, they are large compared to roe and multiples add up!

That’s a small one in my sledge!

Not sure what vehicle you’re using but I have a pole fixed across a pair of roof rack bars so it overhangs the beck slightly & can be used to attach a small block & tackle so I can lift larger beasts up & into the basket. In my experience, small trailers are a pain in the backside when it comes to trying to turn around or back them up as they have very short drawbars & their narrow width means you don’t see them in the mirrors till they’ve gone past the point of starting to jackknife! If you want to use a trailer I’d personally go with something a bit bigger &/or with side extensions that you can see through the back window - something like a quad trailer.

Reckon you could winch up using a Napier click and onto your heck pack if you haven’t given up hope entirely.
I find rolling a buck into the plasterers bath, lifting an end up and then sliding on works quite well. But i expect you’ve tried that!

I put a dead fallow in my Mrs new car . The fallow had been in the chiller then wrapped up in a tarp.
Let's say the bravery tablets I take at time's make me brave and very foolish . 🤷🤦😉🤣😂

 lucky you lived to tell the tale 👍

One issue to consider with the trailer is that small single axle trailers are a pain to reverse as mentioned above but twin axle trailers take up space so where are you going to store it? Never simple :)

I went up to the borders for a few days to get away.
Still had a frosty reception on my return.
Now she has thawed out a bit we are OK.

I have done the trailer thing. Now I use a heck pack for fallow does and Roe.
Any big fallow short drive to my stalking partners chiller as mine is to big enough

I have to cut fallow bucks in half to fit them in. Nothing like that sort of thing to focus the mind on prickets and does.
I can get a fallow buck in my plasterers bath on the heck pack just about. Antlers stick out for comedy value when driving through town.

:) Im lucky enough to have a 4x4.

I cut a length of old heavy duty ladder to fit in the back with a piece of ply that goes over the rungs. Fallow into a plasterers bath, ladder on tail gate, slide up and in ...saves my back and stops the back of the pickup looking like a massacre 👍 Dont think I would get a roe in the back of the bosses car...or live to tell the tail

At your £4.00Kg Tim your purse will be empty with those weights!

I'd be happy paying £4/kg for a 50kg fallow pricket, provided it was head shot and presented to my spec.
Retail value would be around £550

Anyhow, that's not answering the OP's question.
Yes, a little trailer is a great idea. Get one that's fairly low to the ground, and with a tailgate that drops to form a ramp. And if you've got a winch back at the larder to lift carcasses off, you'll be well set up!

I have my own method of lifting and transporting so avoided the drama of any reply regarding a trailer option as I often reverse down a narrow track 1/2 a mile so with a small trailer it would (that you can't see) be useless.
Only 50kg
:tiphat:

Impressive weights 👍
Indeed. I've recently returned from a week on the stags up in Scotland with @NoEyeDeer. He manages a monthly high-seat based fallow doe cull with 10 guns taking the fallow plaguing a large livery in Sussex surrounded by "traditionally-managed" estates and sanctuaries. His fallow carcass weights are substantially lower than what I'm seeing due to the sheer numbers and limiting grazing now left. The attached was sent to me earlier this week from one high seat.

My fallow seem to be living a life of luxury, roaming the Cotswold wooded valleys that allow them to pop up and dine on the tastiest agricultural ground going. If put under pressure, they dive back into the wooded valleys only to reappear elsewhere. Consequently, as they are not resident, my takes are occasional but every fallow taken (14 this year so far) has been in superb condition.
