Parker Hale Scout in .308

They were nothing particularly special just Parker Hale's take on the scout rifle concept using a K98 action in a laminated stock with a detachable magazine. There's not much wrong with a clunky K98 action, they are robust and reliable. Pretty much the usual design concept with Parker Hale, let's just raid the various parts bins that we have in stock and screw on one of our hammer forged barrels, which incidentally were not too bad.
Don't loose the magazine as replacements are hard to come by and very costly if you can find one.

I dare say that that they would shoot copper just the same as any other rifle with the right load.

I would be wary of buying one as they are more than a few years old now, and most purchasers would have bought them for primarily range use using cheap at the time ex-mil ammo which was quite readily available in the day, so could have shot a lot of rounds.

Thanks for the steer 👍

i was interested in one of these back in the day but went off the idea after reports of poor accuracy although that was just hearsay at the time i have no actual experience

personally i'd build what i want , short barrelled remmy 700 in a nice mcmillan with a badger ordnance mag kit to use aics mags , barrel profile to suit yourself

As per title

Opinions on brand and model sought.

Any experience with solid copper ?
They were not at all a bad idea but came too late to save P-Hale. They should have an attempt at a muzzle brake? Which may not endear you to folk shooting either side of you as was at Bisley with three to a firing point. All depends on price and condition IMHO. I do NOT know if the muzzle brake was detachable and if it were detachable if the thread is the usual type that fits most all modern moderators. I'd advise if you want to shoot the thing with a moderator on the end to find that out before final purchase.

A shortish 308 is a fantastic tool. Not knocking your choice of Parker Hale as I’ve not owned one, but the formula of calibre and short and pointy is a pleasure to use.

What rifle /spec ?
It’s a ‘triggers broom’ of a remmy Nimrod 😁
This was built by Andy Massingham/ Ronin - cracking job as usual. Remington 700 in 308, action trued/ proper recoil lug fitted and Sassen cut rifled ten twist barrel at 18”, Cerakoted, bedded into a PSE carbon stock with tier one bottom metal, timney trigger and a very light dpt mod transformed the handling. 138gr Hasler Ariete bullets at 2760fps do the job fine.
It just works.

Would suggest a ten twist 308 - look about for one that you like the look of and don’t bother with barrel length - inexpensive to chop and thread if it suits in other respects?

when i rebarrelled my triggers broom 308 i went with a 1-10'' as the best compromise for my standard 168 amax ammo and 190 gr subsonic stuff

I Britons new from Peter Wilson back way back late 80’s I guess, think paid about 450 new,
Scope rings were always a problem even back then , shot very well, muzzle blast wasn’t a issue as no one used mods on ranges back then ,
The M85 was a god like rifle then so this was a poor man’s version!

Thinking back I think it was a replacement for my confiscated SLR !
Now they were fun, especially on Lydd with the advancing men !

I found the Parker hale safari in 308 kicked like a mule as it was too light for me. A heavier gun amongst other things absorbs the recoil better but it’s a balancing act if you need to carry it a long way on a stalk.

My dad had one with the muzzle break… 😱 God awful thing!

Then one BDS range day we were doing the stalking test and the guy next to me had one in .243 complete with a muzzle break.. ‘cept it was upside down!

He was a big bloke and every time he took a shot the gun would end up at 45degrees! So I ended up having to wait for him before I could take my shot 😡

He wasn’t having any of it when I told him it was the wrong bloody way up! 🤣 Fool.

Cheers
Fizz
