Aren't the authorities asking the impossible of us? People are deliberately killed with knives, motor vehicles, and a whole plethora of items, the police forces themselves have had serving officers that rape and murder. What appears to be missing from our firearms controls and the S1 stuff in particular is any reasonable sense of proportionality.

Told my 'better half' about this thread and quoted the "would your partner hurt an animal" as an example...she laughed and said "no you won't hurt it, you'll kill it but not hurt it"...she deserved me making her dinner that night

I think it is an essential part of vetting: some people are as smooth as butter on the outside, but are monsters or bullies in private.
When I mentioned to the FEO (in Scotland), I was surprised they don't ask others in the household, he says they run the names of others in the household to ensure they don't have records for violence, and do try to speak to the wife. Formalising this would help prevent guns being used for suicide, and may screen out some none of us would like to see anywhere near a firearm.

Twelve years ago when I moved into the house i live in now FEO came to house to inspect security.
After he left he phoned my wife and asked her if all was ok in our marriage .He was happy with her reply .
Have had one renewal since and similar question asked by same FEO.
Renewal application now being processed so expect similar questions .I am quite happy with that

Never had that happen, as far back as I can recall.
(Most recent renewal was about a month ago).
My wife and I both renew our certificates at the same time, so the FEO speaks to both of us together on the same visit.

Wife’s shot gun certificate expired earlier this year- I had to go into a Separate room to be asked if I felt safe in the house etc . The FEO
Was cringing as he was asking me. But it is part of the process now in our area. So that box was ticked off.

I have stored/kept my firearms at my mothers house.

The FEO took her into another room, and I presume he asked these questions (or a similar version appropriate to the situation) to her.

So it's not just romantic partners / spouse, it's potentially anyone you live with.

Just send the wife out shopping, you obviously know in advance when you’re gonna get a visit so use your loaf if you’re in danger of your Mrs saying the wrong thing not rocket science

It makes sense, and there's not much we can do about it, but at the same time I resent the idea of extra hurdles when almost all firearms issues in the UK are illegally held and when previous major shootings have been more often due to police failings in information they already had rather than not having the information.

This is a double edged sword.

If on renewal everything is fine, all the little ducks are in a row, just like the last however many time, and the FEO speaks to the spouse.
Suddenly the application is refused, no specific reason given other than concerns for public safety, or whatever they would call it.

The FEO would be off, going about his business.

If there is any DV going on I would think the perpetrator would soon realise who had said something and they don't usually use a firearm to dispense their 'justice'.

What if a person has no partner at the time of interview but meets one that subsequently moves in a year later?

Had a partner I didn’t live with but intended to they said they’d speak to her on renewal not before

I'd just love Hampshire FLD to ask my Mrs her opinion, they'd be well versed on their shortcomings by the time she'd finished with them
