Another vote for ditching the moderator and leaving it at home. Ruins the balance of the rifle and makes it a nightmare to carry. However agree they serve a purpose for culling large quantities of deer or lamping foxes but for your amateur stalker they are a waste of time and only help fund the gun industry who need another gizmo to add to that new rifle they are selling you (they probably make more margin on the moderator than the rfile). Have on many occasions shot a fox or deer unmoderated and only 10 - 20mins later had another opportunity.

I use a mod on my .243, .17HMR and .22 and have no problem with carrying them comfortably (I carry muzzle down). It does not reduce the supersonic crack of the bullet but does reduce considerably the muzzle blast and so protects my hearing and is less obtrusive to neighbours (my ground is lowland farmland) and any birders who happen to be about at dawn!.
I'm sure that disturbance is less of a problem on the hill and of course it does affect the look of a fine rifle though, I never had one on my sauer .270 and the deer didn't seem to mind - my ears did though!

There are lies, lies, and d@mned lies, then there's statistics...in all honesty, the gun industry makes people feel that a moderator is a requirement, they even try to dress them up to be a piece of rifle jewelry nowadays...you wonder why so few rifles at the range were unmoderated, ask the RFD's flogging them as the new 'cool' and 'must' thing to have.
pile of sh1te in my opinion, completely ruins a rifle, its balance, its looks and its feel. do the yanks have or need them, no, anyone else in the world, no....it's a money thing, don't get fooled! buy some decent ear protection if anything!!!
My impression is that a lot of Yanks would have them if they were allowed them; or in areas where they are allowed them, if the permits were not so expensive. I beleive that they are also much used in certain Scandanavian countries.
Mods certainly spoil the appearance of rifles, and certainly don't enhance the handling qualities. However, my rifles are for using rather than looking at, and the altered (ruined, even) balance has never adversely affected their utility in my experience.
I must admit, I like the recoil reduction and the fact that I don't have to wander about the hill with things stuffed in my ears in order to protect my hearing: and am happy to trade the weight and aesthetic disagvantages for those two advantages.
Decent ear protection is fine, but the expense of buying it for all the people who live near where I lamp foxes might be prohibitive, even if they could be persuaded to wear them.

Why is it only shooting which should be such effected?
Do we see the British Airports Authority dishing our hearing protection to those blighted by their Airports? ............................ No of course not if you complain you get told simple .................................. Move!
Do we see the transport department helping those who are blighted by road noise 12-24 hrs a day? .............................. nope same again tough shite move if you don't like it.
The new range on inspection the new road put through the other year caused them problem with their noise meters. They could not get a good reading on the guns shots due to the constant roar from the new road. The land owner found this amusing as it was a quiet time of year and he told them so and to bring back their noise meter say on a bank holiday weekend to see what noise was really about. So far as I know they have not returned as suggested.
Meanwhile the range has been delayed due to the complaint and objection by an anti so now the banks tot eh sides of the range are to be increased in height, funnily enough to what the builder proposed originally but was told that they were too high and intrusive
, now due to this complaint/objection to further reduce the noise spread from the range. The objector is not pleased, one person you note, and is trying to further put objections in the way of it opening.By the way the objector just happens to be a Police officer who lives far enough away that normally his objections would bear little import but.........................................

Oh dear should I have said the person opposing it was a jumper knitter?
The fact is that he is still a serving Police Officer and it seems using that position to further his objection. As stated he lives too far away to be considered as a normal objector yet this one objector has held up and had the planning consent altered. He had hoped to get it stopped all together but has failed in that so far.
Thanks for your responses everyone. In truth the reason I posted this is because I'm not fully decided whether to get a mod or not, and if I do I'll probably go the extra mile to make it a decent one - my friends all use Reflex T8's which are good, although I was even considering forking out for a MAE T12 - nice and slim and excellent dB reduction and from what I've heard, worth it if you can afford it.
I keep seeing non-screw cut rifles for sale and they do look better without mods, but I could make good use of a mod where I shoot, so the consideration is whether to get the gun screw cut and stick a T12 on it.
(BTW rifles I'm considering are Tikka T3 Lite or Browning X-Bolt Composite Stalker. Open to comments on these as well.)

I use moderators on all but one of my rifles, even the 22RFs. They spoil the look affect the balance and generally spoil everything about a fire rifle. Then you pull the trigger, noise, recoil are reduced, accuracy is improved (in my experience) and of course you do not need to wear ear defenders!
The exception is my Lee Enfield Envoy/L42. This is such a beauty of a rifle that I could not bring myself to have it threaded. It is a joy to shoot and the noise is just a part of it.
I have Brugger and Thomet, Reflex T8 x2, Parker hale (22RF), ASE Ultra Northstar, and even a Hushpower 12G shotgun!
