.25-06

Your under a false impression that certain cartridges are flat shooting

Nothing defies gravity

Learn your external ballistics for the cartridge you shoot

Makes life a whole lot easier

25 creedmoor will be the same as 6/6.5 creedmoor

A cartridge created to expand the coffers of the big red H

They offer nothing over equivalent cartridges already available

You’ll know more about rifles than I ever will. But that’s an easy edit to ‘certain cartridges are flatter shooting’.

Certainly if I take the 6.5x55 out I have to think a lot more than I do with the .270. One must have a slightly better point blank range than the other.

That’s why the .25-06 is appealing but I appreciate it probably doesn’t do anything the .270 doesn’t. But probably milder on the shoulder which does appeal. I can handle recoil but I don’t think anyone enjoys or shoots better with more recoil.

If you home load your x55 could be just as flat as the .270….

I did look for 120 Noslers but they were like hens teeth. I think they’re messy as well?
The ELDX are seriously accurate but just a bit messy,(at times) and a bit loopy.

I like the cal. I just don’t ‘love’ it

The Noslers are good, they do a bit of damage but not horrendous, I found them similar to the 120 pro hunters, though I was pushing the latter 100 fps faster.

I know what you mean, I love my 6.5x55 as it was my first CF and first deer rifle. But between the the deer rifles the .280 gets the most use, followed by the 25-45 followed by the 6.5x55.

I have managed to get north of 3100 fps with the 6.5 and 112 gr yew tree bullet, within no evidence of pressure , which would make it pretty close to being as flat as a .270, similar speed with the tipped long range 114 gr speed would be flatter than a .270 with a barnes 130 gr due to their massive BC.

Thing is, it's all pretty academic - all calibres/cartridges discussed here will take every live quarry in the UK. The heavier cal/cartridge ones will have more recoil but these days recoil is tamed by using moderators.. which have their place when hunting. Though personally, I don't & never have used a mod on any of my rifles other than my .22 rimmy.
Then again. all my rifles are traditional type kipplaufbusch, some, full stocked stutzen's (I love those old MSch's).
But then, I'm old now, legs & feet goosed, definitely a creaking gate! I grew up & enjoyed all my stalking years with some of those discussed on this thread the nett result when it came down to it for ME, is that the .25-06 became my 'Go-to' rifle. It just does everything so easily ya just barely have ta THINK. Point and shoot (Mine is/are always zeroed at 180yds)
Also, I always use fixed power scopes so no mucking about!
There's a lot to be said for not fussing & having a pleasant walk out with a favourite rifle whatever your choice is for me of all of them, my choice was .25-06
I'm still looking for a MSch 7x57 (.275 Rigby & if decent maybe buy it)
Cheers lads

I agree, cartridge choice is pretty academic so long as a Deer legal cartridge used. I just think use whatever floats your boat within those parameters. Having said that, who does not enjoy a good cartridge debate? It has killed some time with my mates sat in a caravan in a forest.

I am a cartridge slut, i love the cartridge i have right up until i decide to move on.

And yes, i have a 25-06. It is a new custom build. I like the idea of 80 grain TTSX at 3700fps and the 100 grain at 3300fps. It may be harder on barrels than some cartridges, but i look on barrels as a consumable, if it's knackered just get another. That is why God gave life to people such as Ronin and Dasherman :) .

A pre war one, with the 16.5 or is it 17.5 inch barrel and the extremely slim stock? Yes please!! And nice one on going for Kipplaufs, - if/when i add another rifle, i expect it to be a Kipplauf, but a bit in the theme of this thread of going for a pretty much do it all cartridge, in a 7x65r i'd expect, or alternatively, in a 7x64.
To me, those two, probably over the 270, or 25-06 or even 6.5 PRC are the true classic but given their typical quick twists and long throats, also modern copper suited cartridges, which if you hunt the hill or open plain a lot will give you those extra 30-40 meters in them vs the x55 or x57 cases , and which uses a useful bullet diameter rich in variety and option.
