when the bullet leaves the gun the target is still moving while it crosses the gap to the target therefore it will be in a different place to where it was when the bullet left the gun so without lead you will shoot behind

or are my physics wrong ?

If helicopter and pig are moving at same speed in same direction, shooter is stationary relative to pig. Bullet has same lateral momentum on leaving the gun, and its flight time is too short to loose this significantly.

Think about sitting in a car on the motorway. If you shot out of your window at the driver of the car in the next lane, would you aim in front of him or dead on?

Also pig is not going 60 - probably nearer 20-25. At 50m, that will give you maybe an inch of drift. Not worth worrying about.

I expect windage is the main issue
gun is doing the same speed as the pigs allowing you to line up on target but the wind in the middle is going back at whatever speed you are doing, so you have a 20-30Km/h 'Cross'wind to deal with, but unlike a normal crosswind this one may be anywhere between down or side on depending which way you point the gun

I assume these are fairly massive slugs so wind will be less of an issue but it will be making a difference

i find it fascinating to be fair this subject and have many interesting discussions about it

even to the point of throwing tennis balls at each other on pushbikes and in 4x4's

i know when passing a rugby ball whilst running your oppo needs to have a little lead or it'll be behind him , well i did know many years ago when i actually run but running is a wholly unpleasant experience now !

What happens in Suffolk stays in Suffolk but sounds like you have a lot of fun....maybe steer clear of helicopters as that might get expensive

The bullet will even in the rifle's magazine be moving, yes. Moving at whatever speed the helicopter is moving at. So I think that, yes, you shoot behind it. There's possibly an explanation as to a similar problem (except here the intended target is also going to be shooting back) in this video.

Although given that in the pig problem the better analogy is the paper man delivering papers throwing them from his moped. That he throws the newspaper for house number 12 as he is level with house number 10 as the newspaper has forward momentum?

Recoil would be less with a moderator? In the description of the video on youtube it says he's using .308
