Deer tray/box for SUVs

New deer box/tray day! For those of you like myself that don’t have the luxury of a truck, so can’t fit a big tub or deer tray in the back of your car, or are simply on a budget - give this a go!

I ordered this heavy duty box, fits perfectly in the boot of my Freelander 2. I’ve not used it in anger yet, but will be heading out this evening to try it.

I used a similar one that a mate lent me so I can’t see this not working

You can get a plasterer’s bath or a deer sled in a FL2. These from various iterations with my old FL2 - now moved onto a Discovery Sport (with a similar layout).

@angel eyes

Get a heck basket, put it on the towbar. Get a sealed box that fits in it. Keeps ticks outside.
Much better idea, imho.
I travelled down from the borders on friday with 5 roe in the plasters bath on the heck pack. With a heavy duty custom made elasticated cover over them . With two short ratchet straps to hold everything in place

With my heck basket I use one of these.

Not sure I would get 5 roe in, but Then, not often I get the chance to shoot 5 roe. lol.
It does a very good job of keeping everything clean

VSS, if a new design is coming, one thing to consider is if an option where the basket it could be folded up and locked up when not carrying anything. Just means that you have less sticking out the back. Just a thought.

VSS, Here is the solution.
Translated :- Back-friendly and suitable for all Heck-Pack rear carriers, including mounting screws. Also suitable for retrofitting. By operating a lever on the rear carrier, you can raise it vertically. By pulling a locking pin, the rear carrier can be used horizontally again. Space-saving: ideal for parking spaces, garages, etc. Basket and quick-release fastener not included!

See my post #13

Just following on from this (although I should probably start a new thread really), if the carrier is designed to accommodate a standard plasterer's bath such as many of us use as carcass trays, would you want a bath with metal runners bolted to the bottom of it or not?
My inclination says not (due to reduced versatility of the bath), but other people may say yes (due to increased strength and rigidity of the bath).

Thoughts please.

The baths are pretty tough old things so I would suggest not, unless you are using the bath as a drag sled.

What about if the runners also enabled the bath to be securely attached to the carrier without the need to be fiddling about with ratchet straps?
(But that would require having a dedicated bath for use with the carrier).

Got you.. Personally, I have 3 of the baths and like to be able to change between them...however if I had to have a dedicated one to avoid "faff" then I would go for this option. I have a big 4 x 4 at the mo so am spoilt.

Like you, I have several of the baths, so I just grab one and go, which is why I'm shying away from the need to have the runners.
But if it makes the attachment so much more solid then I don't think the idea should be dismissed out of hand.

Keep the thoughts coming!

I agree a British a made one would be great.

For me at the moment my heck pack does everything I need it to I dont need a folding one and with two ratchet straps holding everything thing down including the cover. It's spot on for me
