So want to get something for deer stalking first. Not interested in posh guns like Blaser, i want something good and reliable, but not overly priced.

65CM - Going for Sauer 100 Stainless XTA. The 22 inch barrel would accommodate 65CM well i think, nice and accurate. I can then use this for a bit of targets on the range too. Optics unsure, but going for glass, for deer work it wont be more than 250m realistically, and for targets its just fun so not overly bothered, more for deer work.

.308 - going tikka, maybe a modified stock and this will have the Alpex Pro day/night scope fitted. Will buy a separate glass scope later.

Going for quick release mounts on both, not sure which, sports match HOP92 one piece, innomount or QD??

Picatinny rail, unsure?

Moderator - Wildcat or DPT i think

Bipod - no idea, want one that folds up towards the top of the barrel, any recommendations?

Probably buy the XTA this week and order the other bits online, at least ive something to start with.

Think im pretty decided on the XTA, and definaltey getting a Alpex Pro, the bits in the middle im unsure and good glass scope, probably around the £1k mark.

Happy to hear your thoughts

well done getting a 6.5cm and 308 on grant - they wouldn't do that for me in Devon even justifying as 308 setup for boar.

I am on restricted, police approved land only and review in a few months, ex military 24 yrs, DSC1 and did the Avon and Somerset land management cse which normally gives you Open cert, but i have little deer hunting experience, im not complaining, it took 19 months to get this far though.

get rid of the creedmoor and stick with the .308
So i put in 65CM as a bit of an extra, my wish was .308 and i got both! I do like a bit of target shooting from my army days and thought a 65CM could double up as both, my go to gun would be the.308 for deer stalking though. Mmm do i need both? maybe not, definatley keeping .308 though.

I did say it was for wild boar too, initially i was told as ex military that .308 would be ok, i then asked for a bit more and my request was lost in the pile of applications, purely by chance at the Shooting show there was a police stand and i asked for an update, they then finalised it the following week after a 19 month wait.

Picatinny rail, unsure? Essential given your choice of digital and desire to swap

Moderator - Wildcat or DPT i think Too heavy - a Widcat evo weighs 420g - my .308s use a 165g and a 192g mods. My .270 mod weighs 131g!

Bipod - no idea, want one that folds up towards the top of the barrel, any recommendations? Why carry extra weight! Bipods rarely used nowadays except for range work. If wanting one, fit a Spartan mount so you are not lugging unnecessary weight around on the rifle.

See above. For more, over a coffee as offered! Busy day for me at work today, unlike you ;)

I would go up a level in standard and buy used - most deer rifles will have done nothing so one in mint condition saves you money. Do you use a bipod? Some do, some don’t. Invest in a good pair of quad sticks, if you’re unsure. But enjoy! Go to the stalking show for side by side comparisons if you’re unsure need any more - it’s a great position to be in - unlikely to happen again anytime soon!

Definitely off to the stalking show, a few people on my DSC1 course had Viper sticks, seems the popular choice.

I’d chose one of the centrefire chamberings, handle a few and buy just one rifle for now. Get used to it, decide what you love and hate before you buy another. You might also buy a nv dedicated rifle for example for the second one as you see how your shooting unfolds.

You need to be doing a lot of shooting to make two different rifles (and scopes) become like an extension of your being which is what you should try and achieve. I imagine after 19 months dreaming what you might get you are desperate to buy, so I do get it.

I am guessing you have seen the guns you like the look of, or have a friend with them.... Personally I would pick a manufacturer and try to minimise. Nothing will be interchangeable anyway, but when it comes to servicing you may find it easier... eg the bolts come apart the same, or you might be able to swap stocks if desired, etc. I went the Rem700 route, through nothing more then opportunity, and seem to have been lucky that all my larger calibres are that.

Having owned multiple centerfires in the past, I've gone down the route of just a single one now, a 6.5CM for Deer, and then it can do fox control when needed, and is still fun for long range 'zero testing'. with the cost of kit and ammo, just having the one makes the most sense - to me.

Most people who knock the 6.5 Creed have never owned one...and I ll leave it there.

Creed, .270, .308 will all kill deer at sensible ranges if you put the bullet in the right place. 6.5 Creed is popular for a reason, its a bloody good low recoiling, accurate round.
