DEFRA Consultation on further Quarry Restrictions

We are bowing to EU nonsense as woodies are v sparse in mainland Europe.
The "bowing" is supposition, as is the "nonsense", but the point about the relative scarcity of wood pigeon in mainland Europe is relevant.

Our government will copy the EU's homework whenever it is easier, whenever it suits their agenda, and whenever they don't know any better. They don't need the EU's help to be lazy, prejudiced or incompetent.

Had to chuckle from the BASC blurb
a) * This code does not apply to reared and released mallard, and the shooting thereof.

Where is the arrow🔙🔜 pointing to which is a wild or released mallard :tiphat:
the wild mallard breed on the farm pond and walk through the farmyard, some came in the drying shed to pick up loose grain while I was measuring up a job.
Who ever writes this stuff must have a day job as a very junior planning clerk
Where’s the arrow that puts mallard on the list at all?
A think that could be the general idea
Call me mr cynical 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️
The argument will go along the lines of killing birds & leaving the young to starve .
You are obliged to protect birds during the breeding season ( birds directive ). An open season would provide a defined window where you can shoot, say, wood pigeon, without restriction while allowing for control out of season “ for cause”.

Its not perfect, but it works

Not got the code at hand but it makes perfect sense. Wild mallard are declining in numbers, especially the migrant ones due to short stopping. I guess the code advises that wild mallard are shot in some degree of moderation. And wild being regarded as non released on site?.

And then they rightly state that if you are releasing and shooting mallard these guidelines do not apply? perfectly sensible.

Whats your issue?

Otters are taking a lot too- eggs, chicks, adults.

Wouldn't it be far better for the countryside to manage the wild bird pest problems as they can see it out of there windows! than someone sitting in an office dressed in tweed looking the part.
But never had to plough a crop in as its worthless?

In my response i added the need for gulls - badgers - to be put on the list

Defo gulls lol (seaside towns) there a pest.

There are terrible up here in the middle of the country Paul - they lick up Lapwing chicks like a fox on steroids
They are as clever as crows - but 3 times the size - Last year on ground close by i watched about a dozen walk a field in a line better than any we can muster on shoot day ! Nothing would have got through
