I think his point is the 22lr doesn't generate that much heat. My 452 you can chuck rounds down the range with the sporter barrel and it's cold. 17 hmr will warm up the heavy barrel at the range if your sending a few shots down. Centre fires are a whole different kettle of fish with light barrels, of course.

I agree with all your points and Smellydogs. I don't see heat being an issue with a 22lr. I like to look of the Varmint barrel and that really is the main factor for me choosing it. It has its pros & cons and I know it's not for everyone. But it is good to read others reasons for and against.

Get the 520, great scope for a rimfire with the BC and IR, you won’t be disappointed.

Over 20 years ago i bought a 20" cz 452 varmint in 22lr because it seemed the right thing to do ( ie getting the long and varmint barrel)
A couple of weeks back after getting a variation i bought a SH CZ452 American 22lr (16" standard weight barrel) so one of the 22's can be for dedicated NV.

The American is so much lighter and easier to handle and shoots just as well..

Lovely looking rifle, I do like a wood stock but now equally like the synthetic stock too. What weight is your setup coming in at? There seems to a strong argument about the additional weight the heavy barrel adds over the sporter barrel, in mine that difference is only about 1lb.

The 16" Varmint is coming in at around 1lb heavier than it's equivalent in lighter barrel. I would guess the difference between it and the 20" barrel to be a lot more. I did look at going for the wood stock but that would've added more weight. I've always liked the traditional stock but have to say that having the 17hmr synthetic I surpringly like it.

If its a .22lr why would you go for zt4k which need an additional IR and the ergonomics of that when ...the 520 has inbuilt IR that can see as far as one would shoot with a .22lr ?

Its light compact inbuilt IR and just works... I use mine on a .223 so its gonna do anything you want it from it on a .22lr and with less tackle hanging off it

That's the sort of feedback I need Paul. And I agree with what you are saying. I just delved into the ZT4k more today and it certainly looks like a good scope but I'm still thinking the same as what you have stated, maybe just needed to hear someone say it.

From what I've seen on YouTube it's impressive. I'm thankful for your mention of it... Have you used it with an IR torch if so how do you find it for night shooting.

I use the Ward Blade DE on the Annie as it is smaller/lighter and the LL Wraith ESL on the 243.

I don't plan on doing a lot of night shooting with the 22lr so now I'm back to weighing up the pros & cons... The 4k does look a lot clearer and as you say, covers the mag range well too.

Love a CZ, have a 452 but looking to get a newer model this year. My current one has a heavy barrel as does my 308. I just like the balance it gives and find it steady my aim especially on off hand shots.

With a lot of head scratching and YouTube viewing and not forgetting the type of shooting I plan to do I ended up purchasing the DNT zulus zhd520 V2. The tube scope was almost on the table but a deciding factor was that the rifle and scope will always be equipped for day or night shooting once I lifted it out of the gun cabinet. I'm impressed with the night vision, it's amazingly clear. Looking down a laneway until it curved to the left around 155 metres the view was clear and crisp. No issues identifying game or vermin at that range at all. Having looked through the 5x20 I can also understand how useful a 3x12 would be at closer ranges and would say it would still be a very usable option on a rimfire.
