Wonder if the "Member of the public" will end up charged with stealing by finding.

It’s only ‘stealing by finding’ if the finder doesn’t take reasonable steps to find the owner.

When I ived in Colerne, North Wiltshire, Tom King was the Defence Secretary, he lived down the hill.
The village has a small shop. The Armd Police detail guarding him and his property used the shop.
I walked in one afternoon as the plod left. The girl on the till looked at me and said “what do I do with this”, the idiot have left his sidearm on the counter.
My reply was , just put it under the counter, they’ll be back very soon.
I walked out with my bottle of vino as there was a screeching of brakes, plod got the 3/4 of a mile down to their gate house before he remembered.
He very nicely asked for his pistol and walked back to the car.
I’ve no idea on the quality of Wiltshire Firearms trained Police then, just hope it’s much better now
