Not from lead, oh no, from rspb supporters!

They the rspb have encouraged millions of followers to feed birds in the gardens which has resulted in the spreading of a disease that finches in particular are vulnerable to.
They estimate 3m green finches have been lost alone.
The irony is for me though is the fact they can put a shameful number of deaths for their own handiwork but no one seems to have a figure for how many birds have been lost from injesting lead shot!!
From where I'm standing they the guardians of bird life are actually causing more harm than shooting with lead!

I remembered as a kid being told not to feed the birds in the summer as seeds provided are not to good for the young chick. Parents probably going for the easy options and not chasing insects etc.

Yep so if the perceived current wisdom is wrong how can they be trusted over the lead issue!!

Who remembers fly n insect squash on your windscreens during the summer months? Hardly anything now where I am, even road kill rabbits are almost zero,

O.K. so we stop feeding the birds for a few months. This may well help the Greenfinch. But what about all the other bird species that benefit from feeding ? Sparrows, Starlings, Blue Tits, Blackbirds, Robins, and a host of other birds will not get supplementary support. We could loose more birds than we save. If they are to prioritise a particular individual species over another, then why not control Gulls and Crows near breeding colonies for the same reasons.

The Royal society for the protection of buzzards want you to feed and cosolidate small birds on your feeding stations. Why? So their beloved Sparrowhawks can get plenty of food. Ours was regularly used as a Spar Tesco shop until recently.

The mad bird neighbor has about 10 feeding stations in the garden But .
And yes its a big But theyre feeding every pigeon, crow and magpie in the area .
Songbirds don't get a look in .
Her roof in the summer is pigeon schitt central.
A nice idea gone horribly wrong unless your a fat pigeon

Trichomonosis may have been a shock horror headline 20 years ago if the simple cure wasn't to clean your bird feeders occasionally. Presumably SD has picked up on something regurgitated by the Guardian.
Not sure that you have to be a paid up member of the RSPB to feed birds.

Green finch are very susceptible to trichomonisis, but goldfinch and chaffinch get it too. I used to have 30-40 greenfinch on the feeders daily, now I’m lucky to have a couple, but they are bouncing back a bit.

Same as my neighbour... they are both disciples of Chris Packham.
Every morning and afternoon, they pile bird food on the lawn up by their cottage, and also down the bottom of the garden at a feeding station next to the stream... I've lost count this year of how many rats I've trapped in the Fenns and cages along my bit of the stream. And up by their cottage, you get about 30 rooks, plus the pigeons, a couple of pheasants, rats, grey squirrels and Muntjac, all tucking into the seed as soon as it's tipped out.

They don't get theyre not helping at all .By creating dependent animals, and the mouse/ rat problem is off the scale.
My shed is a monster pile of baits to stop them.
