Any stories of longevity or extreme pushing to the limits of items in life

I was doing some leatherwork at the weekend and I decided to treat myself to a new scalpel blade. The picture shows identical items. One is new out the packet and the other I started using about 7yrs ago and have refused to replace it, opting to hone it by hand for continued use instead of just replacing it with a £1 new blade ha ha ha. I felt bad retiring it but it is getting quite fiddly to hold it steady on the sharpening stone.

Fair to say it is a fair bit smaller since I started using it. I have an ancient Victorinox huntsman locking knife tool which I keep meaning to send away for a blade replacement as it has been sharpened so many times that I now need a really extreme angle on it to realise a true edge due to the thickness of the edge as it approaches the spine of the knife because so much material has been worn away over about 20yrs.

I love getting full service out of things but sometimes I probably push it too far. Cars I take to 200k miles before I consider replacement. Last one was 204k and the one before was 241k. Current car is only on 24k so a few years left. I could go on but you get the gist. So what do you people push to the limit.

I was given a pair of Army cold weather DPM trousers back in 1986 I was 13yr old.
They didn't fit well but I kept them & I've used them every winter for ferreting the last 20yrs.
Only a hole in the front knife pocket & faded colours...they don't make them like that now 🫡

I have a pair of wool hiking socks that I bought in Tiso the first time I went to Scotland - July 1998.

For a while when I worked in the middle of nowhere, and we were really starved for entertainment, we held a birthday party for them each year.

I have a Thomas and Thomas 5 weight that nearly broke me when I bought it aged 23 (27 years ago) with an orvis bar stock aluminium reel of some sort. Rod reduced from £500 to £250. That set up has caught hundreds of river trout, plenty from lakes and a few salmon and sea troot too.

Both still my go to for trouting, although I do that less and less.

Always good to see this once more.

Which is like my late father's shotgun he had in 1919. Since then its has had the barrels sleeved and twice re-blacked and I had it re-stocked to fit me with matching forend and the Deeley catch changed to an Anson rod. It's also had new ejectors fitted. But still my late father's same gun.

Xmas prezzy 2000 from my mentors wife a pair of Aigle neoprene wellies just started to leak around the toe area, finish of last season can not be sure putting Stormsure on has not been a success.

BC.
Put a plastic bag over your sock, then put your boot on... "worked for Elvis Presley why can't it work for me"

‘58 pattern webbing worn with uniform by me in 1978 and I’m still using it today. Swiss Army knife engraved with my name and given to me by my late father on my 18th birthday - always kept in the truck today. A Karrimor rucksack circa 1978 still in use, but a bit the worse for wear now.
