My day to day folding pocket knife is a bit battered now, so I’m looking for a buy once cry once 2-3” folding pocket knife, plain/traditional shaped blade, nothing like a Clingon death dagger ie spiderco like shape, good quality steel that holds a razor edge, what’s available that fits the bill?

Does it have to be EDC legal?
Yes it does really, actually dont mind it being on the small side, this will be a “what do you want for your birthday present” from my wife so would like something nice hence the buy once cry once, maybe £100-£200 sort of quality.

Opinel knives are fantastic just careful of blood drying when it’s closed.
If you’re considering a multitool with a knife Leatherman all the way from my experience.
Gerber knives are also very good quality.

Very much depends on what its use will be.

For a daily beater, but good quality, I like the TBS Boar. It's solid, with a nice firm slip joint.

For something that sits in your pocket and disappears, the Spyderco UKPK. Really good knife, and can be customised in terms of scales to make it really your own. Really sharp, just not as solid as the TBS.

For something in between, I really like the Hoo knives. The metal they use is absolutely cracking stuff and they seem to stay sharp really well. Titanium so has some weight to it but feels solid without feeling as chunky/utility as the TBS.

Fancy pants choices would be something like a nice custom friction folder. Some of those are more £3-400 though, like the Kroo or like my Nomad Nano

As a special present at that kind of money have a look at Michael May’s knives, handmade in Sheffield:

I have one of his Yorkshire oak Barlow knives, which is a thing of beauty:

Shame Spyderco is off the table. The Urban is pretty much the perfect UK legal EDC!

Victorinox Alox is good as mentioned above. I carry the Spyderco Roadie though - it’s small but punches well above its weight, more of a traditional design.

Before you write off Spyderco have a look at the Squeak:

It’s a lovely little knife, and very unassuming:

I carry either this or a Victorinox Executive, which is sadly no longer available:

Scrade make some lovely little pocket knives, some single blade some multi bladed.
Hennie Haynes used to carry them, not sure these days.
Yes, they still stock Schrade knives:

Case would be another brand to look at.
