Thinking of ditching my 17HMR

Im thinking about giving up with my .17hmr. Its lovely to shoot but constantly getting split cases and sometimes they end up getting stuck in the chamber and wont eject. What other calibres do similar job without these issues? Mostly for rabbits (without blowing them up)
Thankyou

The obvious answer is the 22LR but I do like my WMR. I really don’t think the worse trajectory matters too much given wind starts to be a problem at the distance the HMR has a real edge in trajectory.

It’s anecdotal but I don’t think I have as many unexplained misses with it either.

Firstly I would try to fix the extraction issue, could be poor contact between case rim and the extractor or crap in the mechanism.

Split cases upon firing are common but nothing I’ve worried about. But I do check every round for splits BEFORE loading as a split case before firing could be a squib load and lead to a jammed bullet in the bore. Firing another round into a blocked barrel is a recipe for a visit to A and E! I have a friend who knows first hand how much that ruins an evening!

Try another brand of ammunition as already suggested.

Alteratives: get a 22lr. If you need to shoot beyond normal .22lr ranges get a dialable scope or a digital scope with a ballistics app and calculate the drops.

(Note that these options are in cost order from cheap to expensive 😉)

Whatever you decide, good luck 👍🏻

Changing ammo is OK as long as it shoots well. If it's all over the place you're better off with the odd ejector issue. Me personally would get rid as I did years back when the ammo was total rubbish.
Get a 17 cf and control your own quality by reloading.

made the switch to ,17 hornet several years ago have never regretted it. Helps if you enjoy reloading then it is cheap to shoot.

If you are using old ammunition it could be from the troubled era.
They have changed the powder and much improved the newer ammo.

Remington is made by CCI as is Hornady 17hmr.
I've had OLD Remington cause a stoppage as well.

Thats because your using Hornaday ..

Try remmington accu-tip
Never had a split case , shot 1000's

Plus there a bit faster too

From my 20" T1X

I've used remington premier accutip since getting my HMR around 10 years ago, never had an issue with them, but I haven't used said rifle for around 18 months. I recently changed my gun cabinets for a bigger one, a d when messing about and moving anmo etc, i discovered a lot of my remington ammo had a very fine split in the necks. Now I've had this ammo for probably 5 years. I'll ditch what is already split and try again. Ive got federal also but never used any of it. I'll have to give it a whirl

I would be equally as happy with another wmr as hmr. Especially with ballistic calculating scopes and lasers.

Don’t wanna tempt fate but I’ve had no issues with Hornady 17g HMR rounds and put a good quantity through it. Happy to switch between those and Winchester. Strip your bolt down & give it a good clean to hopefully solve your extraction issues as others have said. As for the split cases, as long as they’re not split going in and only split when coming out who cares.

I use Hornaday 17 grain V Max, shot many 1000s and not had any issues but have first hand experience of my pal’s rifle having a blow out with old ammunition (stored in the loft for years) and my brother in law has had a couple of blocked barrels with old ammunition (given to him when he bought the rifle, so of unknown age and condition). From limited anecdotal evidence these little cartridges do not seem to last well when sat around. Perhaps it is damp ingress into the powder via split necks.

Damp lol...if ever there was a carry over from the black powder era...
If the powder was so damp so as to be affected the brass and bullet would be very tarnished as well.

The bullet is crimped. Crimping isn't only for securing a bullet in the case.
Sometimes it's desirable to encourage thorough flame propagation to avoid a flame out situation.

They have since changed the powder and I have not noticed any sqibs since.

Mine hates all the tipped bullets, but loves the 17g cci hollow points.
I wouldn't worry about split necks after firing, it matters not!
Get a rifle smith to have a look at it, It shouldn't take much to sort the ejection issue👍
