Not specifically related, but just wanted to say a big shout out to @75 who took me out for an afternoon’s boat fishing on Ladybower reservoir last Friday whilst I was spending a few days North in Derbyshire. I haven’t fly fished in 2 decades and to catch was most wonderful - great day, great company and good craic

lots of local angling clubs have lots of water and struggle survive so buy a ticket. South uist AA is about £40 a season for anyone... support local clubs. I hate this approach to Scotland as if its a free for all. Be respectful for all the work clubs do.

I haven’t fly fished in 2 decades and to catch was most wonderful - great day, great company and good craic

Hello, That looks a bit cooler than down south ??

It was a cooler spell in between heatwaves! We'd hit 36C the week before and it's 32ish today. It was only around 20ish the day we fished, but it was still hard fishing and @wytonpjs did better than the current average. It's been a consistent 9-10 fish per day average all spring and fishing really well on the surface but as soon as we had the first heatwave the fish went deeper and the average dropped to ~3 fish and stayed there since! I'll probably leave it until Sept time now when things cool a little. Plus the autumn colours up there are stunning. Who knows what the water level will be like by then mind you, it's dropping 3-4" per day at the minute!

And getting back on topic - I fully support the philosophy of this but when we were on Harris a few years back there were loads of lovely little lochs and fishy spots. Not always clear (rarely!) who they belonged to or how to get a ticket though.

easy enough to dop a bit of research online these days sanderson's book lochs of scotland used to be the bible and it still useful along with the internet

I’m looking to spend an hour or two on a wee loch with a fly, not pay £250 for a day to fish for salmon with a ghillie. That’s what I mean by cheap/free.

Scottish Isles are known for unmanaged wee hill lochs that receive no work from AA so I’m certainly not looking to take advantage!

Fished Loch Tangasdail this afternoon, found a decent spot in the bottom rh corner in the pic. Couple rising, missed one, then two otters came to investigate and that was that!

Lovely Loch is Tangusdale, fished from the sandy shore and paddled out towards the weeds before getting a few lovely trout on a soldier palmer. Beautiful fish.
Otters are frequent sightings on the outer Isles, lovely to watch.

I went round to the deeper water around the east/south side today, nothing really rising but landed 2 tiddlers that went back. A bigger fish jumped about 2 foot out of the water out in the middle by the weeds.

Off to Uist tomorrow.

Worth getting a ticket for the creed on Lewis. Park on the edge of the castle grounds in Stornoway and walk as far as you can upstream. Then fish all the pools and runs down.
Its fly only and very reasonable. Tickets online.
Ive only blanked once in 4 visits.
The pools are a lot deeper and more defined in the castle grounds. But more heavily fished. Its a small river but a lot of fun.

Unfortunately it’s catch & release which isn’t really for me.

Will try to find out tomorrow if there’s anywhere else where I can keep a sea trout if I’m lucky enough to get one.

North Uist kirkabost sea pools in coming tide. I fish it every time im up. Sea trout. No one has ever approached me.

South Uist estate has some Machar lochs, west Olly being worth a flick for big browns.
Roag for sea trout and salmon. But they will probably be booked so fish them at night do no one sees you.
The Roag burn at the road side has a great pool full of fish by late August if the water is up.

Fish where you want, just keep an eye out and dont stay in the same place to long. Tight lines

I’m on Harris now until tomorrow, then ferry back to Uig first thing Wednesday.

Absolutely, have done this for the brown trout lochs and also fished from a boat for sea trout and salmon. Thoroughly recommended (book a decent Ghillie for the sea trout/salmon if poss)
