Fishing - Inverness area

I am heading to the Inverness area at the weekend with a mate and we are interested in doing a few hours fishing whilst there during the day. Will be spinning and looking at game fish, although I will pack my fly rod too.

Going to check in with a fishing tackle shop in Inverness for options but just wondered if anyone can recommend anywhere. Not looking to pay loads as we won't be doing a full day but open to options.

Cheers

Graham's of Inverness in Castle Street should be able to point you in the right direction. The Inverness Angling Club sell day tickets for the Ness if you want a treat (£30 a day I believe). However watch out for bikes on the way up there as "Thunder in the Glen" is on at Aviemore, so there'll be a few people trundling up there on their freshly polished Harley Davidsons!
Not me though, I can only cope with so much chrome and shiny stuff!

If you’re looking for somewhere to spin for wild brownies try Loch Duntelchaig which is around 12miles from Inverness. Take the road to Dores south access road to Loch Ness and on reaching Dores take the road going up the hill when you reach the Dores Inn, follow the road until you see a big Loch (Duntelchaig) and you’ll come across a turning to the left (Achnabat Farm on the attached picture) going downhill. Take this road and on reaching the bottom of the slope the Loch is on your left-hand side, there is places to park but ensure that your vehicle does not cause an obstruction. Looking at the attached picture, the area of the Loch that looks like the bottom of an ‘H’ provides for casting into deep water. This area is littered with snags but spinning can be productive as there are some big wild fish located here.

A dour Loch and you do have to put in the hours but you may be lucky. A lure called ‘Tasmanian Devil’ is good for this location. As far as permits are concerned, Grahams in Castle Street, Inverness may be able to assist but to be truthful, I have never had one and have never been asked. Having said that it’s been quite a while since I fished the Loch and things may have changed. Tight lines where ever you end up.

Thanks guys, was planning to pop into Grahams.

Actually Caberfeidh, that is fairly close to where we are stalking and was going to check with the farmer for options on the lochs in the area.

If you want to go fly fishing from a boat try Loch Ruthven, it’s just a little bit further than Loch Duntelchaig. A lovely little drift from the island to the boat shed, otherwise stick to the shoreline and cast into where you can no longer see bottom. The main body of the Loch is deep and also holds big fish but you will be lucky to get into them with a fly, unless you’re there for the crack of dawn.

Loch Ashie is good for a cast as well and is in the same area as the two Lochs mentioned, also holds big fish but are a devil to tempt to a fly in what is a very dour Loch - but I used to absolutely love it, presentation is everything. Again maybe things have changed since I last fished that area.
