Oban and Lorn Angling

A good buddy and I, plus better halves are planning a trip up to Scotland. The plan for the lads is to spend a couple of days fishing some of the smaller lochs around the Oban area. We want to fish some of the smaller lochs and lochans that are only accessible by walking in, so at the moment the Sior Lochs, Dubh Mor & Bheag are looking favourable.

It’s looking like mid to late May avoiding the bank holiday is a good time to go.

Does anyone have any experience of the lochs in this area and can offer any tips?

Also other places to see and go in the Oban area would be welcome as I think we are planning for a week long trip, so plenty of time for non fishing activities.

Speak to Adam in Anglers Corner in Oban. He also does guided trips including fly fishing for pollock. Good shop, hunting kit too.

Just got back from the area yesterday, plenty of history and more. Easedale is a nice day out and can fish in some of the abandoned quarries which the sea breaches, I recommend the Oyster for fish and chips. Whilst there if you're on spring tides then take a Seafari trip to the Corryvreckan, they also do wildlife trips. Oban Harbour also has some wildlife tours by boat. Rory Gibson art at Kilmelford if you want a local painting to take home.

Did a sea kayak trip from Oban, saw otters, seals and various birds.

You'll probably be too early for mackerel.

Good time of the year to be trying the hill lochs as long as it hasn't been a cold winter (few and far between these days). It's been a few years since I fished the Oban and Lorn Angling Club Lochs, but the usual loch style flies will work from boat or bank, black pennel, doobry, Invicta, Kate McLaren and Bibio. Also try a few muddlers to create a bit of a stir near the surface. Plenty of pretty brown trout.
If you take your spinning gear there are a few spots around Oban that can be good for a few hours after Pollack and a few coalies (even off the prom).
Lots of hill walking in the area, but try and get to Loch Etive and maybe get a cruise up the Loch and see the Falls of Lora when you are near there. If you can be bothered and if the ferries are playing ball try heading out to Mull and over to Iona to the monastery - well worth a trip - and even up to Tobermory if you have the time.
As @WW. suggested above, make sure you call in at the Anglers Corner for up to date info and permits if you don't get them online. Oban is a lively little place at times and ...err...lots of amusing characters! (Usually in the bars!).
