.243 Non-Toxic Factory Ammo: Struggling for 1700 ft-lbs in a 20" Barrel

Why do we struggle with a picture of a well placed head shot but are happy to see pics of an exploded heart or gralloch with a fully developed foetus?

I have to watch things that are sickening to me - TV is full of stuff about vegans and Chris Packham...I just turn them off but am well aware they still exist
It’s a well place shot until you drop a borlick!

I’ve done it. I’m not afraid to admit it, but luckily, I was able to clear up the mess.

Back on topic - there seem to be a fair few 85 grain factory offerings available but to be fair the ME looks a bit close to the 1700 mark especially as you have a shorter barrel. Suggest you see if you can find something that groups well and ultimately, go by the box data ME. If you keep running it over a chrono and arent getting the required speed you are going to be in the position of - get a new rifle with longer barrel, change to a larger calibre (gaymoor for preference ) or you go down the reloading route. I will be reloading for the .243 and will be going 80 grain TTSX...though not for a couple of years as my .243 is mainly for foxes and the 6.5 manbun is for the deer 👍

Ok, I’m probably overthinking things but I would like to stay the right side of the law if I can especially when police can and will remove licences for seemingly any reason possible.
The freaking police granted it!

Fear, you are allowing fear to dictate to you.
Most definitely overthinking, many do in this FUBAR world.
The law is an ass.

Apologies to those above, my earlier post was not meant to offend or upset.

I appreciate the question asked by the OP was about energy and being legal and my post was not meant to derail or take it off on a tangent, more to illustrate that the .243 is exceptionally capable. Yes a chest shot photo would have illustrated the answer in a more appropriate way but it's harder to photograph or see much.

I think what i was trying to show, was that if it can invert a head, it will definitely still be capable of piercing the shoulder/ribs/chest cavity and making a big mess of the heart and lungs...

I appreciate we all adhere with the 1700 ft lbs ME ...the interesting thing is that little thought is probably given for effective range and the comparable energy at that range. I appreciate that there is a massive variation in how far is to far and I'm not starting to go off piste....just makes you wonder. I suppose like all things its down to experience as to what range we limit shots to. I also imagine in a lot of cases the distance is limited by capability rather then ballistics (and I include myself in that bracket).

If a 90 grain 243 bullet it’s good enough to kill a fox at 300+ metres it’s good enough to kill a deer at 300+ metres I think people line themselves up for problems when they start questioning things. Just pick a bullet if it was accurate use it because accuracy everything.

This was one of the things that prompted me to look into this. If it’s 100ft lb short at the muzzle then it’s ~250ft lb short at 200m compared to the game head 100gr (by my fag packet maths)

Even then it’s more than capable obviously but that’s quite a loss!

In the grand scheme things that’s nothing I personally wouldn’t even worry about it!

Not with a cannon ball!

Ftlbs is the worst form of measurement in ballistics. The result is not even achieved.
A 1lb object is not propelled 1700 ft when hit by a bullet. A 1700lb object does not move one foot!
Most of the world is happy with much less to take large game, very few nations are worse.
Yes and 0.0009 ft lbs with a hypodermic needle!
I agree I find ft lbs very hard to visualize when thinking of a bullet.

I find the 80gr Barnes in .243 more destructive than the 130gr in .308. I can just about get mine to the required speed / energy with an 18” barrel and N140
