Cheap .243’s

Good evening all
Had a scan though my local gun shop last week. And I noticed a lot of .243’s that have come in p/x. He was saying most have p/x’d against a .308/270/6.5 ect ect
Some lovely old guns in there.
The guy who owns it said he’s not going to take any more p/x as they are just not moving.
Am I the only one who thinks it worth trying to buy a really nice “cheap” .243 and see what happens after the lead ban?
I think there would be some really good deals, and I’m guessing that the ammo manufacturers will find something that will work eventually. I’m not totally convinced all the worry is justified.
Does anyone else have similar thoughts?

Cheers Rob

Done to death. Search .243 on here for all the info you want

There’s plenty life left in them as there is loads of non lead ammo for them , in all twist rates

I’ll be keeping mine , or maybe when a Mauser M03 comes up for sale for £50 cause the owner thinks it’s useless I’ll have that as a change

Yes there are lots of lovely .243 bargains available. It's a super cartridge in my experience and well worth buying one or two rifles chambered in .243 as the quality for the price is unbeatable imho and they are so cheap a rebarrelling can be done for a total price that's less than a brand new modern rifle.

Just had a search though
Your rite, sorry to repeat it all again

I've been thinking of selling my 243 but think I'll stock up on components and use it until I run out!
Yeah good point alex
Is there a time limit you have to use them with in? Or is it just untill you run out. So if you were to buy 100 rounds the day before then bam, then you have how ever long to use them?

Being in possession when ban comes in is breaking the new laws, so buying large quantities shortly up to could be seen as a strong indicator of being in possession if the police were to see it on a variation for example

My understanding is that you will still be able to use lead bullets on ranges that are able to collect the lead? So if that's the case I don't think that possession will be illegal. Also BASC website this morning is quoting the calibre cut off is 6.17mm, what have I missed there?? I thought it was 6mm!22396.webp

Great opportunity to buy a donor action! Something like a Tikka T3/T3X. Shoot it til it dies and then rebarrel to a flavour of your choice!

Being in possession won’t be breaking any law.
Use on live quarry may be, but it would have to be proven you’ve used them on deer etc

Having lead ammo won’t be illegal

The bore of the 243 is 6mm. The groove diameter is approaching 6.2mm.

I was told from high up that 243 will be exempt from the ban. Hopefully via the house of lords. That was years ago so don't hold your breath!
I'm also anticipating if it is included in the ban someone producing a special barrel with grooves under 6.17mm which for all intents and purposes probably exists right now undetected via production tolerances naturally.
It maybe that it's so close to the ass of a possible new law no one will bother enforcement wise all potential eyes on the many larger bores. That's pure speculative opinion mind!

I once had a Remington in 243 that had a very tight barrel by the way!

There was an old BDS survey once that suggested that 70% of deer stalking rifles were .243 Its probably less now. Obviously I don't want a lead ban, but I just cant see a ban being introduced that excludes such a large proportion of deer rifles.

To be fair there are plenty of "non toxic" options for .243. Whilst I dont use mine for most of my deer stalking I wont be selling it ... though shooting foxes with copper will make my twitch worse ... but the laws the law.
