For Sale: What is the safest payment method making a purchase on SD ?

Pay pal as gift ! (ONLY ) but if is over an amount and goods are worth ££££££ i always tell them post is an extra and there choice. No come back if lost ? As I've Been there and had to refund and no clue if it ever was actually delivered 🙃.
Alway asked for tracked if its a large amount and just pay the amount for peace of mind.
I take a picture and sent this once posted to prove its gone over the counter belts and braces 😬.

Always do bank transfer for nominal items.I drove upto Dunbar 10yrs ago to meet the seller of my Swaro X5i as that was a fair wack of cash.
The RFD idea is the safest route for both parties IMO providing all involved can agree to it.

Would have been even better on credit card etc… as I’m discovering from buying a Land Rover second hand from a dealer by bank transfer. Fortunately it has Land Rovered within 6 months of purchase.
Private seller, CC not an option.

V5 rung true to the address.

You're obviously ok with risk.....
Buying a LR is far more risky as a lottery in itself, with potential to far exceed the purchase funds with every single day of use 🤣

On this website, I have bought and sold cars, guns, scopes, binos, all manner of ancillary kit and even stocks. I couldn't put a figure on how much money has gone from my hand to another and vice versa and I have never had any issue from anyone. All I look for is that it is a well-known member, who has a history of engagement beyond selling things. If people talk and contribute, are civil and well-mannered, I have no issue paying them via PayPal F&F, direct transfer, cash etc. The method of payment is immaterial, it's better to know who you are buying or selling with

Yes seller pays the fee.
When you transfer the money to there account, you click the goods only box
Or you can pay extra £ to cover the % charge, if the seller will not agree to pay it.
Sometimes this sneaks out the scammers.

If item fails to arrive, you then escalate a claim via PayPal.

Another point and safeguard is to not use savings you have on your PayPal account to purchase goods, but to use credit card transfer, this allows you to contact your credit card company to escalate your claim, if you have money in PayPal account and need to claim you may struggle as PayPal is a transaction company only.

Most folk on here are honest

I’d sooner send the goods and expect payment on arrival

I’d sooner lose the payment than disappoint or deceive

If all else fails?

Gold nuggets

PS

I bought a yacht that way once

But that is a whole different story

I've never had any problems on here of note. All the regulars seem sound... only had an issue with one chap, and that was when I sold on an Aim cheek riser for the same money I paid for it (£10) as I never realised they were handed, and it was the wrong hand for me... sold it for £10 to the first chap who said they would have it (there was plenty wanted it) and all he did was moan via PM, he said there was a rear strap missing, and that it had been cut off... utter bollocks, anyhow, he said he would get the chap who makes all his sheaths for his knives to fix one to it.
Apparently, the original Aim risers only had the straps over the top, and not one covering the butt...
Trust your fellow stalkers/foxers :tiphat:

I wouldnt use paypal, they seem like scum bags to me.
If i can afford to loose it take a risk, if the seller is well known we all seem ok. Except i wouldnt trust any one that thinks you cant lamp hares, they sound dodgy
2k i would drive to collect it

I've bought loads of stuff on shooting forums and I've not been screwed yet.........my rule is to check if the seller has a history of frequent visits to the forum, ie, is he/she a "well known member"?
Considering the hoops we have to jump through to get an FAC, we should be squeaky clean...

D.

Can I just chime in ?

Click on the sellers profile and look how long they’ve been a member. If a trade member (such as myself) you have 110% confidence your product arrives.

Honestly speaking, this forum is full of honest gentleman, I’ve never once been scammed or had any unfair transactions, you can buy and sell in confidence here.

I’d recommend bank PayPal if you’re happy to pay the extra % and transfer and goods, not family and friends.

Regards
Jack

Just skimming through here would doing a trade through RFD not be a potential idea? Most people that I've found working in gun shops are lovely people and incredibly understanding.

The seller could drop the scope off with the RFD and once Its all sorted payment wise the RFD then goes onto shipping the scope too OP? perhaps for a small hassle fee?

You would expect to be paying a fee similar to a RFD transfer fee for their time.

You just have to scope the seller out, ask for there purchase receipt if they send it you no problem, it helps.
look at there previous discussions and sales etc
I've spent 850 on here in one go and it arrived
It is just a leap of faith and trust still unfortunately if it worries you too much let it go...
