A figure I was told many years ago, never questioned it or looked at it from your point of view, I don't deal with posh sheep like yours, swaleys come in a lot lighter, when I do watch hares they seem to be constantly eating

On our pheasant/partridge/duck shoot they are permitted quarry and occasionally there's one or maybe two in the bag. There's a beater that'll gladly have them for food. As for me? They're bloody heavy things and if you're a couple of fields uphill to the nearest transport, they will certainly live another day. If nothing else, I do like to see them about.

Sounds like some people hold hares in higher regard than deer, if the farmer wants them shot dont see the issue.
Cooking hares is not hard, never tried jugged hare.
Hank shaw has a good recipe, thinks its sardinian. As a ragu very good. Fancy trying hassenpfiffer(spelling prob off)
Sad the police are incapable of solving a problem, destruction of all dogs involved would impact them more than damaged cars.
If you dont want to eat them, my dogs love them, dark meat. But i still sear the loins in butter and serve on toast, cooked pink its not as strong as you would think

May have been posh when we got them 7 years ago, but nowadays the market is flooded with ET lambs all bred from the same bloodlines. It’s a genetic disaster in the making, and the main people in the breed society are the absolute worst for it!

Hare is excellent to eat and is especially good in a game pie, but we don’t have loads around here as the bigger agri machinery usually wipes out most leverets. So, just like the partridges that live in my paddocks, they are off menu!

All I will add to the debate is, if you are going to eat them or dispose of them through a game dealer them maybe reduce the number a little (but only a little).
Otherwise leave them alone as it really doesnt sound by the numbers you are quoting they are a genuine damage problem.
Hare numbers from what I have observed over the last 30yrs have declined massively and modern farming techniques has a lot to do with that.
Deer do way more lasting damage than Hares which are in decline.
Just my opinion FWIW.

Im sure i was told 3 rabbits to 1 hare, 3 hare to 1 sheep, so 9 rabbits to sheep.
Small animal tend to eat more than big pound for pound

I wouldn’t shoot them just for the sake of it and I wouldn’t shoot them because the farmer has seen a few and thinks the dog lads will be on them, I’d recommend research, get out at 2 in the morning and see what’s on the land, I’ve got some farms around me that are over run with hares, beginning of the year I was on my mates and there was over 40 on a 7 acre field, on a farm just up the road they did a couple of hare drives at the end of the season and shot over 120, I was on that land about 2 weeks ago and you wouldn’t think they had shot 1 hare, a couple of the farms I shoot ask me to thin them out but leave it to me to decide if there’s to many, same with the deer, back in my formative years I would run them and maybe see a dozen on a night out, now on a few farms a dog would be no good as one field can hold numerous hares ( and the dog is not an option anymore)

Nay.
I think that they're delightful creatures, and the sight of them - even when they're masquerading as munties through my thermal - lifts my spirits.
Luckily my landowners feel the same way.

I don’t think so.
Firstly, a dog worrying livestock is likely to be running pretty fast. Not an ideal target for a rifle, particularly when you're in close proximity to unpredictably moving livestock, and probably the dog's owner too.
Secondly, your FAC has to be conditioned for it. Most aren't.
Shotgun, every time.
