Antler removed while dragging

Was dragging a buck this morning and his antler came off. Have had this around the time deer are about to shed but not this early in the year. Looked infected within, any thoughts?

I've done a follow up shot on a fallow buck before. Head shot from a few meters away.

It certainly made dragging it by the antler "interesting"

Looks like it was broke at the base and riddled with infection.

Any chance of a photo of the "socket"? I'm with @Sol - looks manky in there and they usually snap off more flush rather than leaving what looks like a golf ball sized hole.

That looks rotten. Also , look at the size of the cavity !!

It looks like a tooth that’s been pulled with a dry socket.

Only other photo unfortunately but can see inside if you zoom. Buck was in fine condition apart from this and wouldn’t have known there were any issues with the antler.
