Tried the great wall today and was surprised really ,galvanised chassis leather as standard push button 4x4 good build quality ...doors shut with a good clunk . down sides leaf springs and 2.0 litre engine(underpowered) ,I could feel the difference when I got back in my old l200 and I tried a keeper friends hilux today too and that was far more pokey too .they have a range of backs and accessories ,colours and tyre options .
So would I buy one ? With 3 grands worth of vat on top I don't think so unless they can do a deal,i would be selling my tidy L200 to pay the vat .

I got one. Very happy with it. I still have my Defender 90, the Mrs has her SLK and we have this as a "sensible" car.

I agree, it's NOT very pokey and could do with more grunt in the engine. But its well made and comfortable, it's "fairly" capable off road. I'm not sure that leaf springs are much of an issue as every pickup I have looked at (and I HAVE been looking a lot now) seem to have leaf springs on the back.

For depreciation - I expect it to go down of course. But honestly? I don't care. :smug:I plan on running it to death and expect that to take quite a while.

Would I recomend it? Dunno yet. So far so good and I WOULD recomend anyone to at leat have a good look at it...:thumb:
 
I was in the market for a new pick up and looked at these but the 2 litre engine put me off.All its competitors use 2.5-3 litre for a reason ;)

One of the issues that is putting me off the Great Wall is that there are limited dealers especially in Scotland and as such the servicing, repairs and parts will be quite expensive.
 
We have had a couple of issues with it. The rear parking sensors had to be replaced as they were playing up - it was just supposed to be the sensor controller but they changed out the lot. The reverse gear selector cable also broke. THAT was fun as I found out half way through a 3 point turn :oops: Just managed to get around.;)

That said - nothing else has gone wrong. Used it for work a couple of times on long drives and its a very comfortable place to be. Quiet on the motorway and you're not broken at the other end. :roll:

After the 1000 mile service (free) the engine and gears were noticably different. More poke/pull in the engine and the geer change slicker (if that term can be used in reference to a working truck) - but it does need more power - no two ways about it. You wont beat anyone from the lights or get done for speeding on the motorway - could be a plus :-D - you never know.

I'm lucky that the dealer is 5 miles up the road and they seem to be able to be quick on getting parts and everything is under warrenty for the first few years.

Only down side I have is that the dog HATES it:doh: To get him into the back takes ages and he crawls on his belly upto the back of the truck. I've had people laughing at me as their dog jumps in and out of their car while mine looks pathetically at me from 100 yards away :oops:
 
I asked a while back if the steed came in auto. It did not,but the dealer has just contacted me offering a test drive in there new Ssang Yong korando sport in auto.It also only has a two litre engine but the rest of the spec looks impressive. Any comments?
 
Murryb is that dog related to Gazza,s dog off this site. The problem with the dog and tail gates might be genetic.
I saw a GW pick up just last week it is the first i have ever seen on the roads around glasgow.
 
Murray, maybe your dog is just embarrassed;) what are the other dogs jumping into... he has to face his mates when he arrives at the shoot, its not all about you:rofl:

Your so funny:roll:. Nowt to do with tail gates. With my dog, he just point blank refuses to jump in. With him its a matter of principle and snobbery. You want me to travel in the back of a pick up with spaniels you are going to have to lift me in whilst they are watching. You are my slave.
 
Ssang Yong bought Panther cars from YC Kim in 1988 and opened a factory in harlow to build the Solo II I know as I was there!!
They bought an old Range Rover and cut it into small pieces and each time a Korean went home he took a bit back with him, then they brought out the Musso which was a blatant ripoff of the RR.
VW has 10 car factories in china and they will not accept shoddy quality.

He never used to like getting into the Land Rover either but now he will jump into that no problem. He just doesnt like being in the back of the cab on his own. And as with Gazza's dog - why the hell should he jump up or walk all that way only to end up in the back of a truck on his own. "Carry me bitch" is his attitude :roll:
 
It will be good to see how long they will last in this country with the salt spreading. The earlier onse only lasted around 6 to 8 months in SA before they got cancer but I've heard that the latest ones come with a 5 year corrosion protection.
