Stalkers using Thermal Imagers.

I am seriously looking into getting a TI device, specifically to assist with wild boar control in standing crops where it is virtually impossible to see the sex of the animal or if it has young at foot. Anybody else using one for this purpose or with comments upon how effective the kit would be for this application?

Well I have a guide that I use for bunnies and foxing. Only getting used to it. It's great. Take me wild boar shooting and I will bring my guide for you to demo. :D

Full marks for initiative! Will be next July when the need next arises and I plan to have my own by then but do appreciate the offer. Good kit and do you reckon it would see small piglets in stood corn?

The Guide IR518 can't see through thick vegetation such as hedges, you will pick up the heat signal if there is a gap in the vegetation though.

That ir518 does look good for the price! I was looking at the FLIR monos but at the price they seem to be, the ir518 looks good.

T think I would never spend that kind of money on binoculars. Yet will consider spending it on TI. This subject requires a lot research.

can you connect then to a camera? Then you could take a picture of the thermal targets. For analysis later.

Yep as TSS said, the FLIR only have a low fresh rate about 9hz so when you start moving it it will take a second for the image to catch up where as the GUIDE IIR518C is 50hz and in effect it is no different when moving as it is stationery. The 518C can take still photos and video I will upload some links shortly (just trying to upload them now but its taking a while!) to videos I have taken so you can see the quality.

Yeah i haven't got as far as playing with the photos and video. The instruction manual is a bit chinglish and I haven't bothered too much at this stage with it. But I would like to take brightness down a bit as it does knacker your viaion. As a lefty I look through mine using my right eye and keep my left eye clear for shooting. Cos I am using it in the dark.
On another forum I spend a lot of time on there has been lots of talk about thermal. Those who bought the flir returned them and replaced them with the guide because of the refresh rate.
I did have a look through the FLIR at the game show last year but really it is out in the field that you need to try them to see how well they work.

.....its taking a hell of a long time lol!

I have a few so you can see different animals at different distances ie rats by the barns at 40 yards, sheep in the fields at 100 yards, a horse, a plane!, and some deer at 250-300 yards which is the distance at which you can see that when the manufacturers go on about 800-1200 yards recognition they must be talking about elephant sized objects as in reality you start to find it difficult to identify what the animals are (unless you are already familiar with the land/animal distribution). I reckon you only get that kind of recognition when you are buying kit that is £10k+ (IMO!), for example if you put a sheep and a deer next to each other at 400yards I reckon you identification rate would be hit or miss.

I would agree with that because it is not magnified. You can see something is there but not what it is. I was looking at a flock of sheep and could figure out what they were because they were all sitting down and were half hidden by tall grass. I was starting to think that it was a flock of birds. (I was at a loss till I got up closer to realise what they were.)

...when you consider how much you spend and what the costs of alternatives are such as a lamp or Gen2+ i would definitely want to have ago with one before buying one if I were to do it a gain.

Hopefully this vid works?

Interesting very interesting, and that was at 50 hz?

....think I titled it wrong, that is the 100yard on the x2 magnification I reckon ...it was a while ago and I am trying to remember the distances and magnifications I took the footage!

....and I also just checked the original footage on my pc and uploading to you tube you do lose some quality.

....I am uploading half a dozen more so you can get a better idea but it is going to take an hours or so!
