DSC1 Q & A Thread

Thought I'd start a thread for peeps to post any questions they may have while studying for their DSC1 (or 2 I suppose if it helps) and hopefully the more learned members may be able to help with some answers.

I have done 3 lessons online with DSCTraining and a couple of things have come up I don't understand.

1. What does the term 'Antlers in season mean'?
2. Why wait 10-15 mins before checking on a suspected wounded deer? Surely it could be 100's of yards away by that time and if you don't have a deer dog could be lost!

1, when in it's open season ie buck season and should be with 'antlers'
2, to allow the deer to go into shock near to the edge of cover without risking chasing it further too early after a wounding shot is made. Deer shot and seriously wounded will go a short distance and usually lie down in cover

You can still always shoot it again if you can get a safe shot off. That is never the wrong thing to do if in any doubt.
 
Do Roe bucks not have a 'tush' like the Doe's?

Just got a picture ID wrong but couldn't see the head properly. Only feature was no visible tush,

Never ID solely on a head. This can be particularly true when dealing with culling yearlings. You have to look for pistle or anal tush. Sometimes sorting out which one you are going to cull can take a while.
This is a doe in the foreground ( shot in velvet ) and the one to the rear is a buck shot in august with nothing but knobbles ( gone completely back )

I did a 4 day BDS course and the written papers were done day 3. The shooting and safety test were done day 4, which frankly was tedious, mostly spent hanging about.

Day 4 was also used to let those who had failed on day 3 take a re-sit written paper.

I realise this is controversial, but thats the way BDS did it three years ago. And yes, somehow they marked the papers on the day, and we were told whether we had passed on the day.

I've just been re-capping some of the things on here and noticed your post mate. Is it right that Roe Does also have antlers?? At the risk of sounding completely daft I always thought only the male deer had them??!

Roe does can have antlers but generally do not. It tends to happen as they get older, a lot older. It caused by a hormone imbalance. The antlers never go hard and they never shed their velvet. They can and do still conceive.
 
Thanks guys that's one question I defo got wrong then on my mock test online last night!! Getting that one right would have meant a pass, instead of a 78% fail, lol!!
 
Aren't there different maximum temperatures for fur & feather? atb Tim

Max of 4 degrees C for feather and 7 degrees C fur. I would imagine that Salmonella has something to do with feather requiring a lower temperature than fur but don't quote me on that. It's a good way of remembering it though! Good luck with the level 1 stratts

On my DSC I seem to remember we were told that feathered game was usually hung with guts in (so it's better to get it colder faster and keep it that way) whereas furred game was gralloched.

That may well be why blowin and makes perfect sense. The temperatures I gave are correct though! I can't imagine that the dsc1 question bank asks why though anyway. Candidates just need to know larder temperatures.
