lawrence precision

however if I'm fitting a moderator (providing it's cut true) I match the thread to fit...always surprises me how different they can be.

This seems to be the problem. Moderators not being made to industry standards threads all sorts of sizes. Very poor showing really. Especially when you consider the cost of most of them there really is no excuse for it at all.

Love my LP Nexus. I have an extra baffle installed in one cut for 308 cal and use it on my .223 barrel as well. Would never consider it loud on either of the Blaser barrels.

I did a little research on titanium as a material for mods - apparently NASA say that titanium becomes brittle in carbon rich environments... so is it ideal for mods?

I'll add that I'd like one myself from Lawrence when I have the dough!

Such as in a jet engine, for example? ;)

Were they referring to carbiding? Anything carbided is brittle.

Yeah I guess, don't really know enough about metals & precision engineering to comment further; was just interested to hear any possible issues...

I'm no expert either to be fair, just a consumer. :D

I do know that being a sound moderator on a rifle is a pretty tame existence compared to some environments in which Ti alloys are used. If someone could prove a Ti moderator failed due to some sort of interstitial carbon contamination I'd eat my hat. ;)

If I was going to worry about unsuitable materials it would be aluminium....

Perhaps he could send me one free so I can trial it for safety reasons... :D

I had Simon shorten thread and recrown my .270 and fit an aurora. A super job- I really appreciate good engineering and seeing a craftsman at work so yes expensive but I felt totally confident that he was the man for doing the job on a much loved rifle. He took one look a the factory thread on my Sako 85 condemmed it and rethreaded it while I waited. Really interesting chap. The 270 is tamed and I can now do a range day with out booking into the dentist to have my teeth refitted! I would recommend Simon to any one.

Ive just seen something really alarming on the telly, apparently the US marines are getting a new Howitzer, the M777, to save weight and aid portability its made from Titanium. atb Tim

Had this discussion a few times before and the verdict was it's not suitable for use in sound mods!
Rubbish. They aren't titaniuim anyway, they are a titanium alloy and you only need to look in Wikipedia to see why
Titanium alloys are metals which contain a mixture of titanium and other chemical elements. Such alloys have very high tensile strength and toughness (even at extreme temperatures). They are light in weight, have extraordinary corrosion resistance and the ability to withstand extreme temperatures. However, the high cost of both raw materials and processing limit their use to military applications, aircraft, spacecraft, medical devices, connecting rods on expensive sports cars and some premium sports equipment and consumer electronics. Auto manufacturers Porsche and Ferrari also use titanium alloys in engine components due to its durable properties in these high stress engine environments.

what i can say is iv had 3 ase utra mods and a t8 and in my humble opinion is that the north star was the worst for sound reduction the compact jet z was very good and the cqbs was great on .22 CF iv got the zodiac mod from lawrence precision and it's as good as the t8 and much better than the north star in my opinion and balances the rifle better than a t8 our jet z.
I can't believe that anyone who has heard many other mods in use would buy a Lawrence Precision moderator. I heard one in use yesterday and thought it VERY loud.

I may e wrong or out of date but I think you will find that just like stainless steels there are more than one grade of Titanium. Wonder if anyone tried Nimonics? You don't hear it mentioned much unlike Titanium.

I went to quite a bit of effort in getting two mods side by side, fired one then the other, videoed it (with a witness) and posted it on here. I have yet to see anyone do the same for any other moderator on any shooting forums.

Then someone comes along and says something like "heard one and it's the loudest thing I've ever heard". No details of the circumstances, nothing that would help me understand how their findings can be so completely different from my own. In fact no evidence at all for that matter.

It's frustrating, but there we go. That's the internet for you.

To anyone reading this looking for a moderator, do your research on here, go handle some, hear some, talk to the vendors and customers and buy whatever's right for you.
Im not knocking LP mods it was just an observation but i'm using a A-tec maxim on my 30-06 and a mate has a Jet z on his 270 and compared to these mods the LP which is on a 308 is louder and the guy who owns it agrees
