Out last night.

nice set up paddy.

is that the same pvs 14 as i know about, ??

im into the lamping thing now and with the caller from Steve we have taken some more charlies in the past few weeks the running total for this year with all 4 rifles/shooters and my caller, is now well over 200, but i was out last night and found it hard to get them to come in closer than 300 yards,

lots of hunting pairs and in fact last night we seen 3 fox's in the same field working it together, and 1 very small vixen sat in amongst a group of 5 hares in the middle of a rape field.

very strange night over all but we still had a good time, the weather was mild for the time of year and this meant the land we where on was muddy and very damp so getting around the head lands was hard work and where the farmer had been cutting back the hedgerows the ground was very beaten up so that did not help.

keep it going bud, i will be hoping to start a new count as of the 1st of jan 13, so that i can see just how many I take in a year.

Bob - I do still have the one you know about but this is a different one.

I had 2 foxes on Saturday night, and 3 last night, bringing my personal total to 165 for the year so far. Only one of these was shot from a vehicle - the rest were all taken from 'on foot'. I'd like to do my driving around, but the ground in this part of the world doesn't allow it.

Well I thought I'd add this one in here, Just because of it's admirable adversarial content, made an evening's lamping enjoyable,........ even though he's going to be chuckling about us for a while (a very short while ;)), been visiting a new place with a concentrated fox problem, one fox every visit, right up until last night!!, must admit I do enjoy a player that has been educated by previous encounters,......... we (Mike & I) walked away from the farm this time out to the back of the village, where I considered Charlie's initial entry point was most likely, bloody cows getting in the way every two minutes, good job we didn't have a dog in tow!... sure enough within around twenty minutes, that unmistakeable pair of foglamps, (bins up just to make real sure),.. well I held him with the squeeker for an absolute age, I could even smell the lens cooking on the lamp!, Then a security light went on at a bungalow & he offed us in favour of the dogfood,... moved back to the rear of the farm near the clamp, (I'd popped a couple here the previous week), no show, so off around to the front of the big house next to the lane, spotted him again after a short while, it was made clear that our game was a known quantity, either a house or a mook in the way! exit stage right across the lane into the darkness, O.K. lets pack up & go home,as has happened before, Mike has wrapped & made safe, putting it in the rear of the motor,I get the gate & walk down the drive then pop the lamp back on & guess what? seems that Charlie has a rangefinder too! 700's a tad much on fresh ground!:norty:...... So we'll see him again Tuesday evening, but with prior knowledge of the preferred route!

Well at least he is keeping you on your toes. Lol

Paddy, what models Swarovski you using. After Friday nights efforts I am thinking I need to invest in a serious long range scope something like a 5-25 quality make but do not want to waste my money on the wrong one as it would be an expensive mistake.

I'm using a Swarovski Z6 2.5-15 on my .308 and a Z6 3-18 on my .204. It's worth noting that the Z6i is no good if you wish to use an add-on NV unit as the bulge which results from the illuminator prevents you from using a simple slip-on DSA.

I have overcome the DSA problem with a slightly different solution which allows me to bolt on to the main body of the tube using a weaver rail. I have a picture somewhere. But I use an archer not a pvs but it could probably be adapted to fit and look much better than my bodge job :-D

it is the quality of the scope you are using that interests me because of course we all know that high end scopes do not work with addons because of the coatings. Ahem.
also the zoom range interests me. I am going to do some testing as to how far I can see out and recognise a fox target with a scope and feedback from others using say a 5-25 ends up like you are looking through a toilet tube at high mag so there may be some truth to the saying that you can have to much mag.

A very busy night last night, some difficult acquisition due to milk on the hoof, another taken out, three others at least to go, one even doing it's best impression of a Badger rta on my tow ball step setup, must have come off the yards, due to farmer moving around the sheds, It went away from my position up a concrete road so fast I had trouble tracking it with the lamp!

I've modified a simple archer DSA to fit my Z6i and it works really well, scope wise I've got the 5-30 x 50 and it is a superb scope for foxing with the ability to go to full magnification if required and still give a very good picture. I had a non illuminated version before with the 4 ret and I had to sell it as for some reason I couldn't get on with it under the lamp.

Very puzzled at the Mo',.......... We seem to be the exception regards cubs this year, I know Mike's had one, but the only ones I've seen this year have been dunlopped.

same here I've seen one but in the last two months we've shot 5 vixens all showing no signs of feeding or being in cub.

However the adults seem to keep appearing from somewhere

Still no cubs, apart from the Dunlop ones on the local road networks, last nights Vixen was displaying no visible signs of having cubbed this year, the info from Flyboy (Mike)'s visit here last week was that it turns up dead on 10 o'clock, sure enough right on the nail, came out of the wood carrying a darkish crow sized meal, (maybe a brancher) hard to tell at the distance, re appeared as expected right on the 200yds mark, another 55 grain Nosler shotz on the way. Must agree with Mike, Nosler haven't made a crap bullet yet! definately Mike's observed customer right down to the white tail tip.

Well, last night's outing was a bit of a poke in the eye!:D, Fox rocks up & sits right in front of my position, it sat for around fifteen minutes in full Blitz beam, with absolutely no intention of moving left, right, forwards, couldn't move it with either lamp on or off, went through every call, squeeker, rasper, polystyrene on glass .... etc etc,, it calmly turned it's head to watch the tractor activity in the long sheds pushing feed, I reckon it knew full well the implications of the main trunk road behind it :dummy:, how many times have you stripped your gear & made safe, only to succumb to that last sweep of a backup dash fed lamp on the way out?, Yep, there it was again, but with no intention of going anything like static, reckon Mike will maybe get a try at it this next week.:coat:, seems to be no limit on this new place, it's getting to rival Mikes best producing plot.

Heh Heh!:D, Gave the green filter a whirl last night,.... Got the Barsteward that's been giving me the bird for a while................. dead on 10 pm, Early bath.

Well done! :) We had a large dog fox the night before last, and a scrawny vixen last night - both on a local pheasant shoot. Still very, very few cubs about when compared to last year - even on land where we haven't shot before.

I've had a couple this week - need the Rape cut asap as they're hiding up in it & it's all around the main section of the shoot, can't seem to draw them out !!

Paddy, had a very satisfying cub last week in the yard on this new plot we have, she sat right up tight in front of a pair of pallet fork tines, not much chance of that backstop falling short!:D

We've had the odd cub here and there, but it seems very strange that there are so few about. I suspect that as foxers, we have a lean winter ahead.

Paddy, A lean winter round here seems very unlikely!, Green seems to be the new red for me,:D, Had two out of three last night, number three didn't present a safe shot, this new farm will now have to go on the rota with everyone else, between Mike & Me, we have had at least high teens off there in around six weeks, this place seems to hold the same group of eight Hares, maybe the Fox have been predating on leverets, one of last nights Foxes was even doing acrobatics trying it's luck on Bat catching!, A great twenty minutes was had before sundown, examining two Hares at ever decreasing range in the bins, right up to twenty feet away, (amazing, like having them under a microscope).

FB
I have found that the foxes my way are not that keen on the green filters used on my LED lights.Green is better that white light but for me not as good as the red .

Biggest problem my way is so many youngsters running dogs at anything, that you can get some very lamp shy foxes that are a mare to bag .
