Pimped my Rifle!

Following the recent thread regarding custom build versus off the shelf, here’s an example of what can be done at relatively minimal cost.
A couple of years ago, I bought a Sako 75 in 30.06 which had blued action, a walnut stock and a Reflex T8, topped with a Hungarian S & B 8x56 scope in Optilock mounts, and a Harris bipod. Cost me a very reasonable sum of £750! Although it was a good accurate rifle, I never really used it too much as I preferred my 25.06, so it had sat doing very little. I was also not too confident as the mod had been left on which caused some fairly bad corrosion to the threading. So, I decided it was time for a change! First to go was the stock which was sold recently on here for £75. This was replaced with a Macmillan which I got for an unbelievable £50! The new barrel was then sourced, a Lilja 24” low profile 7mm stainless version (£380). The moderator went back to Jackson Rifles where they did a 40% RRP part exchange which gave me £93 towards the cost of a ASE Utra SL5 .30cal leaving me £174 to pay. I sold the scope to a mate for £350.
So, stock £75 + Mod Trade-in £93 + Scope £350 = £518
£750 original cost - £518 =£232 effectively spent on remains!
The rest was in the hands of the riflesmith!
Total cost works out at only just over £1000 (not including the scope fitted!)
Here is the finished article:

A semi-custom Sako 75 actioned .280 Remington Ackley Improved! 24” Lilja Barrel, Ase Utra SL5 .30 moderator, Macmillan stock pillar bedded, all with a 4 colour Cerakote finish. Topped with a Swarovski 3-12 x 50 Illuminated 4N in Optiloks and a Harris 9-13 SL Bipod. Pimped!

I took it out this morning to fire-form some standard .280 Rem brass into .280 Ackley Improved and thought I might as well work up a load whilst I was there. I loaded 10 at the start load of 52 grains of IMR 4350 and a 140 Barnes TSX head (5 for a run-in and check zero + 5 for a group). I then did two more batches at 53 & 54 grains which was pretty much a compressed load in the standard case!
Here’s the results:
IMAG0294.webp
The 54 grainers went pretty much through a ragged hole which is not bad for a new barrel and a start load on a blustery day! Once I’ve fire formed the brass, I can go up to about 55.4 grains which may bring it in tighter and I have done all these at 50’ off the lands so far. I need to shoot a few deer with it first though to make sure I’m happy with the chosen bullets. The 54 grain load is good enough for now to hunt with. I haven't chrono'd it, but load data suggests that they should be going at just under 3000 fps! Once I’ve done that and fire formed some more brass, I will have another play! It’s got the makings of an absolute ‘tack driver’ though!
Very pleased with it!
MS:-D

Nice bit of kit Mick!!

Now need the 75 stainless action to do the same

Cheers
iain

Does it need to be stainless?:???:
I ended up with a blued action, black stock, stainless barrel, Satin mod and blued rings/bases - but with a coating of cerakote, you'd never know!
MS

Yup - want to keep it that way allied with the stainless barrel.

Cerakote not for me - appreciate it for what it is/does and the looks, but not what I'm looking for

No, I'm not calling your baby ugly

Nice work. It's satisfying to turn an idea into a finished product. Especially one which is unique and personal to you.

Nice stick, good write up think you were lucky with the Macmillan for £50
Makes a new sako look very expensive....... Looks like its gonna be a hammer have fun,

you might find it works well with 162 amax as well....if the twist is fast enough the 180 bergers will let you stretch out a bit :)

When I was planning my own 280 AI build the research on loading data tells us that with the 140 Grain bullet one should be able to comfortably achieve 3100 fps using Reloader 19 and Reloader 22. A friend in the US sent me some data taken from his Sierra Loading manual. From the same data it also says that 2900 fps is achieved using Reloader 22 and the 160 grain bullets. These of course are normal lead cored and not mono metal. I have no data for them and no experience in using them either.

I did find other data but for some reason the pages are no longer in my reloading file which is puzzling indeed as it had the fire forming load and the test firing load on it and those were the only few rounds put through mine. I was preparing cases when everything came to a crashing halt :suss: .

Anyway from my research I deduced that the 280 AI was fully capable of replicating the performance of the .280 Ross but at much lower chamber pressures. Due to the infancy of slow burning smokeless powders back in 1906/7 the only way Ross had of getting the 3140 fps with a 140 grain bullet was to utilise very high chamber pressures. Pressures that no other commercial rifle could withstand without developing problems. Yes even the Mauser 98's developed lug set back at Ross pressures.

This is why very few Ross rifles of the 1907 pattern were chambered in .280 Ross and why he designed the Model 1910 with it's cannon breeching:-

That's part of the proof marking on a Model 1910 Ross sporting rifle in .280 Ross. Proofed at 28 Tons ......................... Todays magnums are proofed at 20 Tons.............................. or were until they went damned metric  . The 270 Winchesters proof pressure was only 19 Tons and it's not exactly a low pressure rounds now is it!

Of course one does not need to run any rifle/cartridge combination at full throttle all the time but it's nice to have the potential for when it may be needed :D .

Glad to see it all came out as well MS :-D I was wondering how it was going.

looking very nice monkey spanker and i am sure you will be very pleased with it;)
I had a 280 ackley built on the sako 75 IV action earlier in the year , specs are Mcmillan sako varmint stock / ukgunworks recoil lug and action screws / border 26 inch 1 in 8.5 twist barrel with minimum spec chamber .
i use Nosler custom 280 ack brass / fed 210M primers / 60 grains of reloader 22 / with the 162 A-max kissing the lands it gives me 3025fps with great accuracy!!!!
Hope you dont mind , heres a pic..

Oh yes , its a great long range tool:-D
Have fun with your rifle , as i am sure you will be pleased with its performance!!;)

Very Nice!!!!
That's a lot of powder too! I'm not sure I'd get a Barnes in there as well as they are quite long!
What calibre was it previously?
I should have mentioned that mine is also chambered in the Nosler/SAAMI spec which is actually 14 thou shorter than the original Ackley wildcat. It's a very important decision to make if you are considering this calibre! There is an explanation why here:

Thankfully I had some good advice from Mr Enfieldspare and Brithunter before I took the plunge!
It seems to have a following in the long range target world too!
Cheers,
MS

You're such a show off MS... :)

It was a nice build, it all went together very well as you can you see. Those early groups look very promising.

So there you have it guys, semi custom rig built by yours truly for not a great deal of money in the long run.

If anyone is looking for a new build or any threading work then give me a shout, I promise not tear you a new behind. :D

Trade enquiries are obviously welcome.

Thanks for the kind words!!;)
I believe it was a 30-06 before , and it is now chambered for the Nosler 280 Ackley brass as well...
Brass seems to be good quality and a pleasure to work with too!!!
Its early days but have shot out to 1078yds on targets using the 162 A-max , with the high BC of 625 they are proving to be a great bullet in this caliber!!!
I did have a 6.5-55 Improved running the 123 A-max at 3000fps and this was a good long range tool as well - but when i ran it alongside the 280 Ack - well its a different animal:-D
Enjoy your new rifle and let us know when you christen it;)

I took it out in the rain tonight and all the paint came off!

Just kiddin!:D I think it would take an angle grinder to get that stuff off!

I almost christened it on a huge Fallow buck earlier! I was sat in a seat 2 nights ago and a group came out and tracked across a field at distance with no safe shot and tracked along a gulley. Tonight I laid in that gulley in the pouring rain and waited. A group of 6 does and kids emerged, followed by a huge Fallow buck. They came out of the wood right in front of another of my seats and then walked right past the seat i was in 2 nights ago!!!:banghead: Too far away with no safe backstop! His day will come! I hate Fallow sometimes!

Pimped and Christened!:thumb:
Not quite the huge Fallow Buck I almost had, but a nice little 1 Year 3 Month old Roe Buck instead. A 'confident in my equipment' neck shot from about 60m at very last light (Illuminated reticle required!)
IMAG0303.webp
Hell of a 'thwack' and neck vertebrae disintegrated. A most satisfying result and even got blood on the new paintwork!
I now feel 'at one' with my pimped rifle!:D
Thanks James, you did a great job!;)

I bet it went thwack being hit with that! :) I have to say it is a good calibre, it's better than I expected, might have to build one for myself! :D
