Ooommmmmggggg i missed a peach of a fox

Well I would of thought the issue could have been a maize stalk which you couldnt see in the way. If using BT bullets then huge chance that the bullet might not get to the target. Had it happen in long rape stubble and a dead cow parsley stalk saved a basil one night.

Also agree just shoot at the biggest bit of the target to kill it, head only if thets all you can identify then needs very good scope and lamp, better to leave it rather than have a very well educated fox.

The other day I had got myself comfortable on top of some silage bales, there was a grassy bank at 250 yds, I was there early and saw some rabbits on the bank, I ranged the first one at 270yds and shot it, thinking it would be good fox bait, then another appeared 260yds, shot that too. After hitting two rabbits at a fair distance I was feeling confident, an hour later at dusk charlie appeared.... and I missed the cnut....

So from the first post you say the shot was well beyond 200yds and for some reason you went for a head shot? You claim to take head shots all the time on foxes, even at that distance. Can you explain why its necessary to always go for a head shot on a fox with a 22-250?

THATS NOT THE FIRST TIME I HAVE BEEN ASKED THAT. BECAUSE I HAVE FINE TUNED MY RIFLES AND HOME LOADS TO DO JUST THAT, I DO TAKE A FEW WITH THE 30-06 DEPENDING ON WEATHER IM SHOOTING OFF THE BI-POD OR OUT THE WINDOW OF MY TRUCK.

IF ITS NOT HOLE ON HOLE ITS NOT GOOD ENOUGH :-D

OR I COULD JUST BRING MY TEN SHOT 12g

If we all hit everything we shot at all the it wouldn't be much fun. Miss an odd one now and again and it keeps you on you toes.

Brilliant.

A foxes c*** is not an easy target at that distance, try aiming centre mass or the bib if it's looking straight at you :D

Easy mate ! Some people prefer headshots for good reason !

Well after reading this and having a chuckle at some of the replys I also missed a peach of a fox. I know the rifle was bang on because I zero'd it before going out and i'd taken a couple of good distance rabbits out with it.
Damn you fox fever!!

1 hole groups every time ! you want to scrap the rifle or the scope . If you zero it on a full sheet of ply you might find your getting 1 bull and the rest are way wide of the target

I wasn't aware he had tried a 22 Hornet at 250 yards yet!

I love this thread as a classic in exposing the human 'condition' and the pasion for saying anything but what's actually in our head!

well , whats in my head is this op says he always head shoots foxes , he always gets 1 hole groups and has fine tuned his rifle himself so is suprised to miss one at 200+ . I have shot a fox or two in the last 30 years and i dont head shoot everything , in fact hardly any , for the last few years ive been using a £6000 custom built rifle , i can get a 5 shot group with all the holes touching at 100 but not a 1 hole group . All sounds like bucking follocks to me

Do you mean you've developed a homeload for group size and you've zeroe'd your rifle at 200 yards using these loads? I think you'll find that what you've done is excellent but isn't specifically "head-shot" related. You'll find shots into the boiler room just as satisfying.

Well if you've "only shot a fox or two" it's no wonder it sounds a bit strange to you  I should think every benchrest and F-class shooter in the land would be pleased to knock consistent 1-hole 5-shot groups at 100 yards.
The only time I deliberately headshot foxes was when they were laying down chest on, or sitting in crops with just the head showing and only then when there wasn't an issue with wind or a bigger killzone available.
S'funny how many forget to factor in the wind when throwing small grain centrefire bullets at a three inch killzone at 200 yards. When the keeper wants them dead and in the back of the truck you tend to shoot them where you know it's going to work first time.
