giving up

The upside in having now land......

Several commandments..........

1 knowing you will never loose any land and the dreaded phone call informing you of your loss knowing you can't financially compete.

2 you'll get to meet more fellow stalkers and explore more of this gorgeous country side we have.

3 you get to learn and share different methods

4 you'll never throw the towel in.

5 you'll not become greedy, even though I'd love thousands of acres to repay all who has helped me allowing them t stalk as a good will gesture.

6 saves you thousands of pounds in not needing a 4x4

7 saves again plenty of pound notes on a deer dog.

My time of the month rant over.

If and when I win the lottery I will go against everything I have just mentioned.
+1 for what i would have to pay to join a syndicate or pay for my own lease, I can have many paid stalks and meet lots of fellow stalkers and make new friends. My shooting buddy is part of a small syndicate he has been for 1 days stalk this year and no deer grassed for his £2k as he has been busy with a house move etc. I on the other hand have had 5 days stalking all paid stalks with 7 deer grassed and cost me less than his £2k and I dont have to worry who else is shooting my lease while i am 100 odd miles away. Stick with it mate.

If i had went that length of time and had no real stalking of my own i would also wrap it in. Why bother but what i wouldnt do is put it on the Internet i would just sell up and have done with it.But this way you might ***** someone's conscience and you might get asked out for a day or to good luck with that.

There are others you could add to this list....

I don't know why anyone who is onto stalking would give it up just because they can't get their own ground???? Your either into the sport or your not. If you are, then book a few days over the winter at roe does. Its cheap and as the above post suggests saves the expense on other items and issues.

Its funny, because in stalking the vast majority of folk seem to want their own ground, yet in fishing the vast majority seem happy to pay just to fish for a day/several days/a week, and not have the desire to own a bit of river...

Up here you wouldnt have to contemplate giving it up as you would have no chance of getting a FAC on the promise of a paid outing. Unless you have written contract for cleared land you dont get the ticket. No ifs or buts..

Are you saying the Police in Sterling don't follow Home office guidelines?

Surely not

Dont mean to hijack the thread but all you need to tick all your boxes is salk with a guide booked, preferably on Email so it can be shown to flo, then check if the ground is cleared for calibre again can be done on email.

Tony you sound proper pi.sed of ....if you want a day on the fallow pm me ...im in sussex its a bit of a slap down but your welcome ..

I am always surprised to hear these stories. As a relative inexperienced beginner (been shooting for just 5 years) I manage to get prime Cotswolds land offered to me to stalk on without any money changing hands, to the point where I now pass the request on to others who I know and trust and who are looking for more land. Yes, I did struggle when I started with deer stalking, but getting the DSC1 was helpful and now having the LANTRA L2 and DSC2 has been very helpful. When I struggled and had lots of doors closed in my face I got some guys together and started a DMG - the DMG has had backing and involvement from our local Police, the Cotswolds AONB, The National Trust, Conservation Charities etc. etc - and with the help of those credentials you will slowly get there. Whether this particular DMG is going to be viable long-term remains to be seen but on a personal level it has helped me and a few trusted members to reach our objectives.
Yes, you do need to show commitment, help out with some jobs on the land, show yourself to be reliable and honest, but most importantly I think you need to show you have qualifications and be totally 100% non-commercial. You have to agree with a landowner that you don't have to pay; you don't get paid by the landowner; you stay well away from 'trophy-hunting'; you don't bring shooting clients; you don't sell any venison so don't gain financially from the asset you take off the land; you bring the farmer/landowner a regular supply of butchered and nicely packed and clearly labelled venison; and you make the farmer/landowner understand that you do them a service by controlling the deer.
And most importantly: You have to do what the landowner wants you to do. It is his land and his deer, after all.

Yip they told me last year they would pull my ticket as I left the syndicate I was in and told me payed days dont count I needed to have a permission. But they werent to happy when basc called them..

Nutty

did you speak with your FLO or the office? I had the same reply to stalking when talking to the office staff. "you cant have a ticket without permission on land" i was told by them
After a receipt for stalking was presented to the FLO he sorted it out. I now have .243 and .308 for deer based on one receipt.

From what your saying here the DMG was just a means to an end , nothing to do with deer welfare just a front to get you & some trusted mates some stalking , if you cant sell the venison what do you do with it ?

What would be an acceptable motivation for setting up a DMG? whos going to put the hours in if they dont enjoy it (assuming that they are not making money out of it)? Erics set up may have deer welfare at the top of its agenda, you dont know and neither do I.
Lets be honest. Most of us stalk because we enjoy it and that is our primary motivation. Deer welfare is mandatory if you choose to get involved in management or recreational stalking but I doubt its the primary motivational factor of most sttalkers.
Tony, hope something comes up for you.

Deer welfare is the motivation , & I would hope that's eric's main objective but he says that know they have the stalking the DMG may fold having been the vehicle to get where there now at . Did the various bodies i.e police , NT etc that helped them get the stalking realise it wasn't a permanent DMG ? not that it bothers me I just read it as a bit mercenary ...this is not a sour grapes comment ,I stalk 3 or 4 times a week & pay for it by doing the job the farmers want so I know what eric is saying only to well , which prompted my question on venison

There you go Tony.
Look at all the fantastic replies you have had from your post. Keep the faith, it will come.
Big up SD I say. Good on all .

Hello Mate
Sorry to hear stalking is tough at the moment, dont give up, If you are down Devon way give me a bell and i will try and find something for you. I have a cracking pro stalker mate who always gets me on Roe or Fallow in the new forest and is very reasonable. on another note we are after a service manager up your way if you fancy a change to the "green" side get in touch..and you will not be able to forget what a ULV is !!!!!

You're not the only one in s yorks to be told that mate , not me personally but a lad I know . I would always ask to talk to the flo as the office staff don't seem to have a clue ... Frightening really

going off topic a bit, but five yrs stalking , and you run a dmg, dsc1 and 2 and a large area of prime Cotswold stalking free of charge , imagine what would happen if you had been stalking for 30 , there would be nothing
left for the rest of us.

Can I just say I am completely blown away with the replies and kind, encouraging replies,I have had.
I cannot thank the pm guys and their kindness enough, also thanks Dave 223 that quad still tickles me.
Paul, did we sit our dsc 1 at jelen?
Right I had better buy a few rounds of ammo,I have had the last 2 rounds in me pocket for the last 3 years, hell I might even take them with the rifle next time I go to Daves.
Thank you.
Tone.
