Sporting rifle too much overseas hunting !!!!!!

It can hardly call itself a magazine - It is nothing more than manufacturers advertising wrapped up in pseudo journalism, presented by a bunch of self promoting posers. Best thing that can happen to it is use the price of the rag to by a pint of decent ale and pocket the change!

it looks like everyone seems to be a bit sick of the sporting rifle but what decent mags are out there? I too have noticed the blatant sponsorship of certain products and a few of the writers get right on my tits (and I have heard a few comments from other folks to prove i'm not the only one) but theres not much out there to be honest . or is there?

what other publications are worth a flick through ?

This will probably rock the boat even more but I do occasionally get Fieldsports quarterly! It's more for a decent read than anything else. I may well be £5 and only 4 times a year, but I find most of the wide ranging articles very interesting, especially some of the more historical ones. Again, lots of stuff in there is kinda out of my league, but everything seems so much more well written.

Lots on driven shooting etc in there too, but some interesting pieces on stalking. I sometimes find one of the decent stalking/rifle related articles in here worth a dozen of the repetitively churned out write ups in some magazines.

Stopped buying it as it was full of foxing write up's. Now I enjoy hunting a few foxes but love stalking, balance seemd to have swung to foxes and people sponsered by xyz saying you got to have one or your a nobody. (implied)
If any one interested I've got last years editions going for free if you want to collect. (perhaps a donation to SD or other cause on here)

Coincidentally I was in a newsagents today killing time and had a look at sporting rifle. I pretty quickly decided there was no way I'd pay that kind of money for it and I haven't read one for a couple of years.

My take on the OS articles in magazines is that they are there for all those that want to get their heads above the average Muntjac,Roe, Fallow other deer and the vermin species. A chance to broaden horizons and see whats out there on the other side, but then if you want to stay at home in a high seat on a 20 acre oat paddock thats your choice too of course.

I like to see a big Kudu bull essay.... and even if its a Pom doing the hunting!

BTW one doesnt get the prize over 42 others if not half good at ones job.

Sporting Rifle editor-in-chief Peter Carr has beaten a field of 42 international journalists to take home the Zeiss Sports Optics Journalist of the Year award.

The award was presented for his conservation work in Sporting Rifle, which has seen over £25,000 raised for the charity Save the Rhino over three years.
The funds have funded vital anti-poaching efforts at uMkhuze game reserve in South Africa and Big Game Parks in Swaziland.
Mr Carr, who also holds the editorship on Modern Gamekeeping magazines and a dual presenter-director role on The Shooting Show, said: “It was the first time in my life I have been lost for words, but I accepted this award on behalf of all of you who have supported this initiative, the other hunting journalists present, and the Blaze Publishing team, who have believed in this fundraiser from its outset. I sincerely cannot thank you enough.”

problem is that there is limited material to write about , stalk it , shoot it ,lamp it, its all the same stuff shooting times is no different and for that matter nor is Digital Photo except its a different sort of shooting

Think this is very true and after you have read the mag for a full year it just repeats. The editorial team are just trying to offer something new or broader. Still the high high level of marketing of kit does make me laugh especially on there youtube channel programs. Still watch them but gave up on the mag.

The way I see it and I'm not saying I'm right but the older authors had a good bit of history behind them and a wealth of stories to bolster up any articles they wrote.
These guys only have the here and now and any piece of kit they can lay their hands on to write about.
Stoped buying it a few months ago now.

+1
Agree its getting boring and i shall not be going to renue next year. I would like to see stuff like the best water proof kit as tested by real folks and boots for not just stalking but say beating or other, kit reviews not just big game and bullet hunting / NRA bits and bobs i don't use FMJ or AMAX for hunting !!
its not as it was in the first #1 mag. And you can see most of it for free on the shooting show

Spot on there it's advertising in exchange for someone's free hunts nothing more! And they have the cheek to try & charge us for it, on yer bike!
Cancelled my subscription after six months (18 months ago) because it's just full of the same old rubbish spieling the same old crud.

There is a need to change the upper level of management - I think we all know who, as it's a boy's club reporting on freebies.

If it wasn't bought, they'd soon look at the issues.

I simply cannot fathom out why people are still buying this rag?

It's been a joke for ages now.

Just as folks are happy to spend all day window shopping in Bluewater in the name of "Retail Therapy" so too are certain shooters. They just prefer or are forced to get their fix c/o clinical publications such as SR with all its glossy pictures of must-have kit.

+1 I used to get shooting times subscription for valentines day but asked for trout and salmon instead last year as after four or five years got bored of the same old *****, especially Clare zambuni the shooting times equivalent of sporting rifle... As said there's only so much you write about whatever the subject, even the stories in 60+ are starting to get a bit repetitive.... :coat:

All I can say is there must be a lot of very sad people about .
