Not sporting rifle or the shooting show..... As someone else mentioned mr Carr may not have the presenting skills of some, but who would you rather front a shooting programme, someone who actually shoots ( paid, invited, sponsors jolly or whatever) or some tit with a media degree who has no connection to the sport whatsoever? And before anyone says it I have no connection to mr Carr, never even met the man. But as already said there is not much else on offer be it magazine or internet tv show, so make the most of it and pick the bones out of it that you are interested in reading/watching.
and let's face it how many of us given the chance would not like to be in mr carrs position of editing/presenting such publications travelling the would to hunt and using/being given the best kit on the market? Anyone who says they would needs some paxo shoving up they're ricker?....

merry christmas anyhow!

Know here is some food for thought , instead of wingeing about the content of sporting rifle why not put pen to paper and submit some of your experiences to blaze publishing , if they are deemed to be of decent usable quality
with pictorial documentation I am sure they will be published , hence if enough quality is sent in the less room will be left for articles you don't want to read, but ask yourself this ? How many one here have shot overseas and should they put pen to paper would it not be to cover their overseas experience .
get over it lads it's called sporting rifle not stalking rifle if it offends you that much don't buy it as for the editor , it does not matter who it is as the previous one (Selena ) was also flamed on here by your good selves so much so that as a contributor she felt her only option was to leave the site.
As for catching up with Mr Carr you can do so at any of the game fares throughout the country , you will nearly always catch him on the sporting rifle stand believe it or not.
I can not believe admin have let this flaming continue as I would be worried about the legal implications.

Well said pierred.
There have been many really offensive and downright unpleasant comments made regarding Sporting Rifle and those who write for it. Many of the criticisms have a degree of truth many others are totally incorrect. Any contributor writes behind his own name not an alias as on websites. So why they should be pilloried for what they do is totally beyond me. As has been said before you don't have to buy the mag.
Some of those who choose to wage a vendetta against SR and its editor may well not stand up to scrutiny themselves! Sadly this sort of thing does absolutely nothing for Stalking Directory.

How does that work then? Folk capable of writing decent stuff and taking some good photos will replace the advertising features???? Who funds the magazine then?

I don't have any real issue with the magazine except I do think its full of adverts almost suggesting if you don't use this rifle, scope, jacket, trousers, Binos you won't shoot any deer... I buy it probably 3 or 4 times a year for something to flick through. I don't mind the overseas stuff. Trout & Salmon magazine, which I have been buying since the age of 12, never missed a copy, now has occasional overseas features and I'm happy they are included.

I do have an issue though when told stories about folk, made worse when they are about people supposed to be embassadors for our sport, who try to take someone who doesn't know any better to the cleaners with a fee of over £500 to shoot one doe!!!! In fact what possible good do they put back in to stalking when that's how they treat an unsuspecting newcomer? I met Weeman when he told me the story and believe his account as he was prevented parting with the cash because of unforeseen circumstances. Luckily for him.

What are the legal implications in coming on here and publicising a shockingly high price that was attempted to be charged?

As BH says, why not all keep our mouths shut and let folk like that continue to make huge sums of money on the back of someone who doesn't know better...

Since I started taking guests out some of the stories I've been told really boil the blood. It's the one side of stalking that I detest. Fine making a fair living from it, but a living by taking complete advantage of folk desperate to break into the sport???

I would go as far as saying its the ugly side of stalking and it disgusts me....

Brian I am not saying it would replace the advertising that would just drive up the price of the mag as sponsors keep the budget low , hell you only have to look at all the banners on the site it's needed but that's not what the OP was griping about he was stating his displeasure of to much overseas content.
As for the rediculas prices being charged for stalking I have myself been a victim and see it as supply and demand if we are silly enough to pay then the silly charges will continue. It is an ugly side to the sport I agree but as I say supply and demand it's the same in any game.

Sorry guys, I'm going to make myself unpopular (again) but can we please keep this thread on topic, i.e. feedback on SR and preferably constructive feedback. I've just removed a few posts which were not. I know some of you have strong feelings about the person/people behind the magazine but please bear in mind that we, as in Admin, have no way of proving or disproving any personal disputes/accusations that pop up in the course of these threads, yet it will be us alongside you in the dock defending any legal actions which may arise as a consequence!

We (the SD) have our own detractors too (shock horror!) and one of the things that commonly crops up is "all they do is slag X Y or Z off on that site". That's not what we are about. If you don't like the magazine then by all means say so and give your reasons... or even better give your reasons and some suggestions as to how to make it better.

I know some of you will think "oh he's censoring us again" but trust me, we (myself, Malc and John) do regularly go into bat to defend our members' right to an opinion. We probably get legal threats on a monthly basis. This is not the case here so far but please don't let this thread become personal or it will have to go.

I'm not on the SR payroll and I don't personally subscribe to SR either (I wish I had the time to read mags!) but in the interests of keeping things strictly subjective regards the criticism which always pops up about SR being repetitive.... we are guilty of this too. In fact this thread is a prime example! Just something to consider....

Fair enough Alex.....

We can have a private chat at the Fair! :D

Ok Brian, looking forward to it again! :D

In fact the Deer Stalking Fair is one of the few things that has received 100% positive feedback on here, you should feel justly proud! :D

I've also heard great things about the stalking fair but sadly never been able to attend but this year I'm going for Definate! :) really looking forward to it

Look at that... I told everyone to keep it on topic and then helped to take it off topic

Ok back on topic, SR Feedback, starting.... now!

Ha ha cheers Brian, see you there...... Will Byron Pace be paying a visit again? Back on track kind of.

Yep! Sorry Alex, back on the subject..

Don't mind the safari articles, just tell us more about the job at hand and a bit more about the animals being hunted and not how some special y-fronts with a Zeiss badge on saved the day. Seriously though a bit more for humble newcomers!

Good magazine, the only one i buy. Am looking forward to reading Rudi van Ket`s future articles on dog tracking and it`s not before time they started including them.

I think its easy to forget that the title is Sporting Rifle and therefore the primary focus is on the rifle, associated kit and then the use of said kit, in that order. I suppose that when you address a subject from that angle it is inevitable that product placement and advertising will come to the fore.

What a lot of people (including me) seem to be suggesting is that they would like something that is primarily about the stalking, with the kit as a secondary (less emphasised) aspect.

I've no doubt that the second model is a more difficult prospect to launch and build a successful circulation, but nothing good ever came easily...
