Sporting rifle too much overseas hunting !!!!!!

I am not sure its fair to try Mr Carr like this in public. Sounds like he has had issues in the past that to some extent he has paid his dues.

Like many I would expect he is no different in making the most out of his current position and the people and contacts it brings and I would not hold this against him.

What this thread is about is the contents of the magazine and perhaps we could give some constructive feed back to the magazine on what would be of interest.

I agree with all above total crap nothing but adds, would not buy it. an alternative would be new Zealand hunter or some of the other nz hunting mags. some great articals in them

the OP pointed out there is too much in the mag on overseas shooting iho so you suggest buying a nz hunting mag?

I replied to a survey for the magazine over 18months ago making a few suggestions - nothing seems to have been actioned.

I take New Zealand Hunter and I am happy with the content however the paper/ink smell really weird and it puts me right off reading it. I gave up Sporting Rifle as soon as the product placement references started to pepper every article.

the nz mags are about proper hunting with some very good reading. totally different from sporting rifle. it was only a suggestion, maybe I,d be better not bothering:oops:
They might well be about 'proper hunting'.... But what the OP was saying is there is too much about overseas hunting in sporting rifle so a nz hunting mag as good as it may be really goes against what his original point was? Maybe you'd be better reading the thread properly before wading in and slagging the only dedicated rifle shooting mag we've got:oops::oops:

The problem for the editor is how do you retain the interest from the experienced shooter to keep buying this magazine, the experienced shooter has seen it all and done it all in the UK (mainly) so the editor places some articles from far flung places.
But what us old farts must not forget is the new younger guys entering this sport, they are hungry for information and articles, so they buy up all they can, until they twig it is getting repetitive they keep buying the magazine.
Its the same with fly fishing mags, every year around September you get the same or similar heading 'frying tonight' meaning the reservoir trout target the small fish fry for food, boring, but not to a newbe.
As for fair reviews, forget it, they would be committing suicide by criticising a main sponsors product.

So in my opinion you are better off posting and reading articles on this site, the articles are generally well written in comparison to the magazines and you will learn more.
Reviews and advice is honest, and that's what you want.

Cheers

Richard

My experience with SR is similar to that I found with photography magazines; after about a year, they broadly repeat themselves. I had a subscription to SR last year as a Christmas present, but I have let it lapse. I only looked forward to David BB's articles. I prefer the forthright and passionate views on here. With that in mind, I'm thinking of buying a Blaser R8 in 6.5x55, what do you all think.........?

starting to see why some people don,t bother posting
Well thought out reply... Far too easy to jump on the bandwagon and start slating something, but for fear of repeating myself the original post was about overseas hunting in the sporting rifle and you pip up and slag the magazine off. Yes things are repetitive, as they are in every other magazine be it shooting photography or knitting, and yes there are adverts and sponsors plugs, but who do you think actually funds the magazine? It's certainly not the people that buy it...
Do you slag bet lynch off because of the shameless plugging of cadburys( other chocolates are available) during the advert break on Corrie? I don't buy the mag every month, I might buy a copy now and again as I might other hunting shooting fishing mags. Yes it may be heavy on the cover price but so are most magazines, hones are the days of paying 2 shillings for the shooting times but you could just about get a pint and a half in a pub for the price of a magazine that comes out once a month, which as already said is the only dedicated rifle shooting magazine on these shores...
the shooting show sponsored by swaro is no different to fieldsports Britain constant plugging of zeiss of team wild tv living in real tree, they do it to keep the sponsors happy which is what provides the funds to make these shows for us to watch, free of charge and sit here and slag them off....
sometimes it may be better to pick the bones out of these mags and internet tv shows that you enjoy and keep your trap shut...

Someone already mentioned there being but limited subject matter to communicate and that won’t change anytime soon. However, occasionally a publication gets it right c/o perfect timing and for me the most recent example was Todd Kindler’s “Small Calibre News” from the US back in the 90’s. Followed closely by The Varmint Hunter journal.

Even these have a limited shelf life but at least such earned their spurs, so-to-speak, having been in at the beginning and in no small way influenced our greater concern for accuracy in rifles of all manufacture. Indeed one might argue that these two magazines alone ensured factory rifles now come from the box with improved and more consistent accuracy than might have been the case had neither publication got off the ground.

I`ve enjoyed my sporting rifle subscription for a few years, but its run out now and i`m going to try something different for a while.Sporting gun.Used to get it, but grew tired of that just as i`m now tired of sporting rifle. Its become `bog reading`.I`m not going to critisize it, but its a good thing to reapraise your reading material once in a while.I picked up a sporting gun in the beaters barn the other day and was enthused. It seems to cover more of my shooting interests now which can subtley change over a period of time.

I would also reccommend some off the NZ hunting mags, had me hooked when i was over there. Really well written by proper working class lads. Also so quite intresting science and studies in them, satellite tracking sika deer in certain areas
plus all the whapti stuff trying to bring back the purer blood and get some big trophy animals again

And i know it is based abroad which defeats the whole point of the thread, but it is the way they are written by local boys going out roughing camping under a tarp for a couple of nights to fill the freezer. U could subsitute any place name with a uk place name or a person for a boy u shoot/stalk with, end of day stalking into a deer is the same buzz no matter wot country its in. All these boys are just keen amatuers with no product placement. And the scenery is absolutely stunning. Bottom line is the boys who are writting it are just normal blokes u'd happily share a pint with not some chinnless wonder job for the boys muppet. And are equally happy to write about for a hard stalk into a doe/hind or young buck as they are a bigger buck/stag, all about being out and the stalk the animal is almost secondry

It is a vast difference from reading about someone getting guiding into DG or trophy animal with a team of trackers and folk to extract the beast

Never bought sporting rifle for a few years now, didn't think much off it then, I get sent that modern gamekeeper for nowt every month complete heap of crap not unusual for me to throw it straight in the bin now without opening it, very rarely read an article even when i do open it.

Must admit i buy ST every week (and been buying it for a good few years now) and while it can get repetative at times i always read it cover to cover.
Each to there own

i would have to agree there is too much advertising in sporting rifle at present and i have stopped buying it time for change of format more uk deer stalking and boar reguired

Your better spending your fiver on five lucky dips and hope for the best. and if you win go and join all the cast of the sporting gun in Africa because if you buy the MAG its us that's paying for trips Africa that's a fact boys.

By the look of how many have stopped buying the mag they will be lucky to get a coach to hull. So maybe they need the sponsors to pay for their hols.
Anyone thinking of starting up a publication, you can get lots of nice holidays and free shooting gear.

But that's next week and I haven't written anything yet! To tell the truth I've been very short of adventures to relate recently. I had planned a trip to the foreshore yesterday, but due to perfect 'fowling weather conditions, we couldn't actually get there. I'll try again next wek.
