Knife for a stalkers 60th birthday I've started making

Started polishing the flats on this one last night. Gave it a going over on some Japanese water stones my old mate Glyn sent me. Basically i was using them like the Japanese sword polishers used/use them.

This was after half an hour or so:

You can see how it was in the matt grey steel on the left. A few more scratches to get out, then a rub down at 6000 grit and a final polish on a stitched and a loose mop.

Hoping to do some work on it this weekend, shaping the bolster, and possibly even getting it riveted on. I'll use JB weld as well for that.

:british:

With a bit of effort that'll come up nice

I can't wait to see it mate, the polished areas are flawless, a real delight for me. Not had the gear to achieve that before, and to do it on Stones..... I find that incredible by itself!

Glad you are getting to grips with those water stones mate. They were wasted sitting in my drawer without the skill to use them. Keep up the good work. Glyn

Been at a Bushcrafters show today mate. About wore the stones out! Must have sharpened 12 or 13 knives and of all things a straight razor! They definitely work betterer than the way i used to do the job. :)

Just had a tense few minutes on the anvil riveting the bolster on!

Looks good for now, hope it stays that way! :scared:

Really enjoying this thread. I love the Loveless style knives and this one is shaping up lovely.

cheers,

Bob

Great write up and lovely looking handiwork so far. I've been following this thread with interest, it fascinates me the work that goes into creating such a beautiful piece. Out of interest, how many hours do you think you've spent on it so far? (Or is that a faux pas equal to asking a lady how old she is?)

Thanks Bob, glad you're liking it. :)

Sadly mate i couldn't guess! Been on and off for the last 10 months with this yin. Lot of water under the bridge in that time, family bereavement, other projects been and gone..... Just couldn't know for sure! :?:

I can say there's been more than a few chilly evenings of 4-5 hours in the garage over the winter doing the filing after work! I say chilly because you could have grated cheese on my ball bag most nights.

The bolster has been a massive leap for me, never done one before, it was metaphorically like stalking on a new bit of permission and not really knowing the boundaries, a bit unsure at each new fence. So i had to research how best to do it.

Although I've got till August to get this one finished, it was imperative that i got the bolster right first time. Hence the small amount of tension over the anvil yesterday! :D

Well it looks cracking mate, I certainly wouldn't have guessed it was your first one if you hadn't mentioned it. Well done! I'm sure the very lucky guy who gets it for his birthday will appreciate all the blood sweat (or icicles) and tears that has gone into creating it.

look forward to watching this come to completion.

I might try and make the effort to log my hours next time I start one, it'll be an interesting exercise. Work out what it would cost to do it at my works hourly rate and see just how much it would cost if I made these at work.

One thing it will show is just how little profit there is in it! :D

I have been poping in and out of this post and i very much like what i am seeing can't wait to see it with its scales on :tiphat:

Ps its my 55 if aug ?? ;) and i like box elder gold/black lol. its very nice.

Its so nice to see the use of a bolster on a knife as there seems to be something of an aversion to such in the UK and not sure why. Can’t be laziness on the part of makers. Surely?

Oh, and is this 1[SUP]st[/SUP] prize in the SD Bisley Shoot on 8[SUP]th[/SUP] June?? If it is I may just have to cancel the Bushcraft course my Daughter is on that weekend!
