This was always going to be contentious!
So here's my two penneth.
I would like to leave out the "is it stalking" part, that is up to the individual.
The main issue is, is along range shot less humane than a short range shot?
Debateable, and thats what were here to do,debate!
Scenario 1.
walking along a ride a deer walks out at 100yds, you deploy sticks or shoot it freehand, bit of panic maybe or you take your time, but time is not of the essence, quickly you flip up the lid safety off, bang! you miss!
Is that careless? or just stalking?
Scenario 2
your sat on your vantage point looking at deer 500+ yds away, deer are completely unaware that you are there, ranged it, dialed it, wait for the right moment, no rush,Bang! its dead.Is that careless shooting or just something your not interested in!
There is a great deal of skill in both scenarios, and before one decries the other you have to decide was either shot careless.
I can here those that disagree saying more can go wrong at distance, but you have just missed at 100yds.
Most long distance shooters I know can shoot better at 500yds than most stalkers at 100yds, you noticed I said long distance shooters, there is a huge difference between the two..
The long distance shooter is methodical in his approach he is not rushed, there is no buck fever, the biggest factor is wind not drop.
Wind can be calculated accurately, drop is even easier, buck fever cannot be calculated.
If anyone is in any doubt of what can be acheived then go on to longrangehunting, and see how they can consistently shoot rabbits and crows out to 800yds and beyond..
How do they do it? they choose their moment, a luxury that the woodland stalker very rarely has!
Now it may not float your boat, but that does not mean that you should dismiss it out of hand.
