Do You really need a bush on the end of the mod

I will be having an MAE moderator for the Winmag, only for places that I have to use one, this reflex comes back over the barrel same as, but has no bush.

if you wish to have the bush in place why not do what I did about 8 years back

I had the inside of the bush removed/machined to tack a O ring, this did 2 things

1 protected the rifle barrel from scratches when slipping it on.

2, it allows the rear of the mod to be supported and maintain a good fit with no marks left on the barrel

I hate rifles that have the rear bush mark it spoils the look of the rifle and I would never own a rifle in this condition

you have to take a bit more of the washer away so that the O ring is doing the job not the washer, Delrin is as hard as a Glaswegian after he has had his wee man tattooed with the Scotland flag.

Any selenium dioxide-based bluing solution will sort this issue. I have some Birchwood Casey gel that I use to touch up any bluing wear/damage. Just clean the metal, dab on some of the gel, then leave for a few seconds before washing away with clean water. Just repeat as needed until you get the depth of finish you need :thumb:

The last thing you want is a tight fitting bush unless your smith has cut the mod thread aligned to the barrel outer diameter instead of the bore.
If your mod thread is cut properly centred to the bore you would not want to push it off line via a bushing centring on the outside. Bore of the barrel is mostly not 100% in the centre of the outside diameter. If I fit a bush then prefer to have a ~0.5mm gap to the barrel.

I have been looking for a tight fitting bush all my life.

A friend of mine was machining out the bush for my Hardy mod yesterday and was going to fit it tight to the barrel but I dissagreed and thought it should be 0.5mm oversized all round to avoid touching the barrel. In the end, it was my mod so I won  So he machined it .25 bigger all round but when fitted it was still touching on one side. In the end we took another .5mm off before it cleared the barrel all round which suggests that the thread was centred on the bore and by centering the bush on the outside of the barrel we would have been forcing a .5mm (min) alignment error on the mod. I can't imagine the bush flexing to take up this error, so if we had fitted it tight to the barrel, it's likely that the mod wouldn't have mated up fully with the shoulder of the thread.

I've used a few moderators without a rear bush fitted, and haven't noticed any issues at all. By over sizing the bush it fills the hole in the end of the mod without touching the barrel. The theory is that it shouldn't shoot any differently with or without the bush fitted.

its worth noting that most off the shelf mods don't come with any instructions stating that the bush must be fitted and must be tight or otherwise.
