Are you a Deer Stalker or a killer?

My view for what its worth - you earn the title of "stalker" because you can get close to your prey and take a safe and certain shot without it knowing you're there.

You're a "killer" to use the words of the original post if you think that shooting is the challenge to be overcome.

Even though we all aim for "certain" shots, we still make mistakes from time to time. So anything that makes a clean kill more likely when you squeeze that trigger is good by me. Top scope, bi-pod, range time, stick - all tools to delivering a humane kill.

Where there's more grey area - and maybe where the original poster was going - is on things like feeding and live update trail cams. Good tools for deer management - but can we still call it stalking ... any thoughts?

+1 We do put out feeders occasionally, doesn't feel great but - particularly for munties - it can be useful.

This really sums up this thread, combination of technology and a good clean kill!

Problem is the old values are crumbling.

What an interesting and bizzarre-looking film, of which I have not previously heard.

How astonishing to modern ears is the comment on Barry's choice of gun (at 31s). I am allowed a 16bore for cultural reasons (being half-German), but no adult should use an o/u unless they happen to be French, or a 20bore unless they are a lady.

And no, using 28g (or heavier) cartridges in it doesn't somehow make it all right!

Having hunted around the world. There are many situations where the stalking of game without them being alert is neigh on impossible. I know this is a forum for stalking so ill ask what is the minimum visibility required to stalk game. Does stalking require you to follow sign or do you spot with optics and then start to stalk. Do you stalk upright or crawl on your belly for hundreds of meters?

Yes even back then 20bore o/u was considered gay. Check out Yul Brenner in drag.

Probably shouldn't discuss lady guns, could end up with another thread on the .243.

WG I have to agree on public knowledge of where food comes from, we had a news film crew in today, who did not want to film lambs being born, as it could upset some people.

This is exactly the sort of thing that worries me. If youngsters aren't given the oportunity to see and be taught about how animals are bred and how they are "transformed" from "nice fluffy things that run around and look cute" to the meat that is served up to them at meal times then what sort of a world are we going to eventually end up in?
The secondary school I went to (after being thrown out of grammar school for not being interested in the academic subjects -For those who know the area Wootton County Secondary School which I believe has now amalgamated with Katherine Lady Berkeleys Grammar School to make a Comprehensive School) was very good on teaching rurla and practical subjects. As a teenager I was taught many aspects of "animal husbandry" and we had our own garden allotment where we were tuaght various aspects of horticulture. Those who wanted to were taught how to breed and "care for" chickens, rabbits and goats etc (We even built our own pountry incubator and used it to hatch and rear much of our own poultry) and we were also taught how to properly and humanely slaughter rabbits and poultry as well as "dress and butcher it" right through to presenting it in it's "oven ready state".
I consider myself extremely fortunate to have had such an educational oportunity and feel that so many children nowadays are being really deprived of a healthy education through not being able to gain this sort of knowledge because of what might be seen as "political corectness"!

Sorry Frenchie, keeping chickens rather than eating mcnuggets doesn't make you a stalker, killer maybe lol!

I see a lot a traffic here about high value guns with higher value scopes being shot off of some form of artifical rest, bipod etc. I propose that those using such are not stalkers but rather shooters. A friend of mine who is a professional forester there in the Uk described hiself as a deer killer, not a stalker. I think these folks with their "sniper" set-ups are also "Deer killers", not stalkers. We are no longer subsistance hunters and in my mind are not true sportsmen unless we are shooting off our elbows or at most using a leather sling. Any moron with hi-tech equipment can shoot deer fron long ranges but they are certainly not stalkers.

SS

Well MARCBO, do you consider yourself a stalker?

I heard that MARCBO heads out into the wilderness with nothing but body hair for camouflage and maybe a select piece of foliage depending on the season. His weapon is cunning, stealth and his two bare hands.

That may well be the case! As it is I was doing nothing more than Agreeing with the short post that Taff put up.
I never made any attempt to class myself as either a stalker, a shooter or just an outright killer, further to that to try to make any sort of a comparison between rearing and keeping poultry and other small livestock and stalking would be rediculous, to me they are as much alike as chalk and cheese!

The look wouldn't be complete without mullet and headband though :D

Are we not really all the same the objective being the humane dispatch of the quarry in whichever guise sport protection of crops venison work whats the difference should we not speak from the same hymn sheet for the greater good.........ect...ect ?

This is ridiculous. The speed and reflexes of a deer would make neigh on impossible to stalk and grab a healthy deer. The size of the deer would limit the hunter to deer smaller than fallow. Apart from traps about the only way to do it without rifles or arrows is this way.

10 years to get a deer.

This guy can do it ....barehanded red deer! Check out his other stuff, one of my favourites is ferreting with snakes!

The guy is a total fraud. As one of the members here can even tell you the farm that domesticated deer was bought from for that filming. Don't believe the crap on the net some guy has that he was able to man wrestle a stag off a wallow. He was metres behind it when they let it go and he slipped. If you can believe somebody can run a red down in the forest and man handle to the ground, then why even have a stalking forum?. Trust me mate, I hunt over hounds and even the bloodhounds would struggle to do that and they can run at 40km/hr.

Total horse****.
