no1 reticle

Hi, just trying to get an idea of the popularity of the no 1 reticle. I have a coupke of german scopes which I am contemplating selling. Is there much interest in the old school german hunting reticle? Thoughts and comments appreciated.

Horrible - and usually very hard to sell on in the UK.

Absolutely tops in low light environs. I have a copy of an old training document from WWII showing German snipers how to use the No.1 for range estimation. With the numbers of grown men in the UK the 243 I can well imagine they could not appreciate the No. 1. It is afterall, not sexy.

It's what I have on my drilling. It's fine, no trouble to use at all. Took all of two minutes to get used to.

I like them but have never been able to buy one seen as most of the scope producers don't offer the nr 1 in their reticle options. Have mostly nr 4 / flashdot 7 in my line up.

Next time your down you can play with the combi with Nr1 reticle in the khales. I shot a mass of deer with my Brno and East German ziess with Nr1 reticle.

They are good for tall and thin targets...ie MEN...but not so good on bullseye targets unless they are of the "half moon" type. In essence they have ALL the advantages of clarity of certainty of aim mark as a blade foresight.

So good on moving targets of LIGHT colour, targets of light colour or with a defined "mark" to aim at. And the extra advantage of no rearsight to worry about. But they have all the disadvantages that a blade foresight also has.

So if you have a shooting problem that the BEST solution is a blade foresight the No1 will work excellently. If you have a shooting problem (a round all black bullseye or very dark colour shape that is moving) where a blade foresight is a poor solution then the No1 will work badly.

In truth I have had both No1 and No4 and now prefer the Zeiss interpretation of the Leuopold "duplex" as the best "all around" reticule for my shooting.

The Leupold custom shop has installed several No.1's over the years for in their scopes. Seems like it cost around $60 for the last one.

Horrible things and if you need the degree of assistance such are said to give you in poor light and/or on a moving target, purchase an illuminated crosshair or dot.

There are several renditions of the German #1 recticle.

The single post, like a front sight blade, as described by enfieldspares, is very fast to get on target. It is good for shooting men. Zeroed at 300 yards, you put it on the belt buckle when they are closer, up halfway at 400, top of the head at 500.

The thicker, tapered post, with a point like a obelisk, is good for dangerous game. Zero the point at 100. For 200 yards, use the base of the pointed part.

The ones like that with a thin horizontal line are helpful to stay lined up on game running across, like drive boar and stags.

The ones with an obelisk and thick horizontal lines are good in bad light on light-colored game, and in bright light they are good on dark game, as in putting the gap on a dark cape buffalo coming to get you.

A duplex with thicker lines and then fine in the center with a narrow gap is mighty good on a variety of game and in shooting conditions, fast enough on target, and capable for fine aiming.

Ive 3 Zeiss with the No 1 and I love it. All are 6x and it seems to work well. I'd prefer the sharper point on the Docter scopes but you can't have everything.
The clarity of a good German scope makes the argument that a crosshair has more precise placement ability moot. The No 1 is great in low light if your scope is not illuminated. Beats the crap out of a fancy BDC reticle in low light conditions (I have a Rapid Z too).

always thought they would be more popular if all the lines were pointed and the point on the upright was centred with the points on the others

just never got used to them as I subconsciously want to make POA on the centre line of the horizontal rather than the top edge

But that will work - quickly shooting at 25 to 50 yards on moving or charging game.

Make what is natural work for you.

Sight in the rifle for the horizontal line on at 25 to 30 yards.
With a .30-06, .308, or 375 H&H, you are about an inch high at 50, 2 inches high at 100, on again at the peak of the vertical line at 200.

Any chance I could get a copy of that publication?
