"Bullet Heads"

Why do people refer to the projectile that leaves a gun barrel as a "head"or even worse a "bullet head'?
It is a BULLET, its that simple. The head is the base of the cartridge case that houses the primer. Not having a pop at new re-loaders here, there are some rifle builders that describe BULLETS as heads on their stock lists.

Who cares, we all know what is meant.

You won't mind someone talking about his "gun", because we'll all know he means his rifle? Or maybe he means his shotgun?

Heads are what sailors use, not a component of small arms ammunition. Let's use the correct tterms and encourage others to do likewise.

When you shoot a deer, is it a bullet that kills it, or do you head butt it to death?

It is better to remain silent, and let them think your a fool, than to open your mouth and remove all doubt

actually you're quite correct, makes no odds to me, too many self righteous pendants out there who just live to correct other people and make a point.

I once asked a RFD for 243 calibre bullets and he said "do you mean heads" i said "no i mean bullets"
He then produced several box's of bullets and cartridges and when i picked the bullets he said "yeah heads"
but recorded them on my FAC as 243 exp proj.

Yeah- I hate those smug, dangly rascals! (I'm guessing you were being ironic.)

Back on topic, if bullets are heads then presumably "case-head separation" is merely the normal process that should occur when firing a rifle?

It's true that everyone knows what is meant by "heads" but it's another example of the sloppy dilution of our language, which is slowly eroding the ease with which we can express ourselves clearly.

Luckily we have emoticons to replace the blurred vocabulary :D

I agree.

Don't even mind when the press insists on referring to sporting rifles as 'deadly', 'sniper', 'high powered' or 'military style' just to reinforce the negativity? We know what they mean too...

Bullets, Bullets, Bullets - Yes, Pi**** me off too. Especially when it's from people who should know better like dealers selling reloading gear etc.

Head - space, head - stamp, head separation are one end and the pointy thing goes in the other end.

It often surprises me that some people who shoot seem to have no interest in knowing a little more about their chosen sport, not knowing the difference between Berdan primed cases and Boxer cases or what and where the Meplat and cannelure is.
