I think halt den Schnabel, or less-informally, halten Sie den Schnabel, might be less inappropriate.

Could be, I only heard it twice in a very agitated voice from the same mother, directed to her 15 yo son.

She would quite correctly be using the familiar form Halt den Schnabel! in that circumstance.

Perhaps I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud, but I think between adults who are not well-acquainted, Halten Sie den Schnabel is better.

My own mother used to use Halt die Klappe!, but only when very exasperated.

I never heard my mum or grandmother (Oma) use the phrase Halt den schnabel but they regularly used Halt die klappe usually directed at my dad or myself

If I took my car to the garage to have the clutch repaired and the mechanic referred to it as a "gripper". I'd strongly suspect he hadn't got a clue what he was talking about. The phrase "bullet head" has the same effect.
