Land Reform and it's Impact On Stalking and the countryside

I can't see what taking ground then paying to keep it is going to make it any better than way it is now ?
Private investment followed by money coming in via commercial shooting stalking fishing ... In turn providing shepherd jobs forestry jobs , gamekeepers gillies stalkers local hotelier , up keep of roads etc
... So we going to pay for all this to same extent so some little ned can fish & shoot his air rifle & leave a pile of crap at their ass as they do round Loch Lomond already ?

Thought we were in austerity ?
Let the private individuals pay it & continue rural economy

We pay it , it won't be to same standard .., shooting & fishing go down , rural economy drops , not some up keep spent jobs lost.

Kalahari you are correct a massive proportion bought in to the SNP but the Anti feeling during the election did not come from the scots it came from the English. UKIP, LONDON MARE, and Cameron him self used it as he new it would kill off Labour. We had a labour chap shouting he was a celtic (MURPHY) to win the Catholic vote in the narrow minded areas of the central belt. You are correct time for a change but this is a stalking and deer management site and that's were this thread should stay.
MICK no I do not believe that the land reform bill is about deer but that's really the only area I wish to discuss because that's what I do.
My real job is a driving instructor and I have seen that industry get pulled from Scotland to England over the last 10 years.But that's for a different thread on a different site lol.
SAUER your a Ned lol.and what's wrong with a chap wanting to go fishing or use his Air rifle ???? The jobs you mention will be more plenty full

this is possibly the most overlooked aspect of any Land reform discussion
very very few of these estates make any money at all
most lose thousands even with investment
 
while I have sympathy for some SNP policy , the land reform proposals are cockeyed to say the least, I am not against community buy outs when a property comes on the market, but compulsory get a grip.

But remember this is not just SNP Policy the Labour party in Scotland are singing from the same hymn sheet.

Community buy outs have not been a great success in general apart from perhaps in Assynt where they seem to at least be trying to run in a traditional way.

One community buy out that I know of stopped all shooting on the ground, now a few years on I have been approached by them to cull the deer, not manage them but cull them all as they are damaging the under growth
and the woodland floor is bare and there is nothing for people to see on their woodland walks.
I turned it down because of the politics involved.

One of the problems I can see is that while its community owned and there are locals on the committee, those earning a salary from it are not local, the chap in charge of the woodland nice guy though he is is from the Midlands and I don't mean that he belongs the Midlands but that that is where his main business is and he travels up to oversee the woodland work, how can that be cost effective, surely if its community owned those working on it should be of the community, there are plenty locals qualified to do the job, but don't think any of them wanted it which maybe tells you something.

Really irrelevant now with the new SFP replacement starting, loads of farmers have retired over the past 15 years and still continued to claim there SFP, (only benfit it has is a demand for 'naked acres', some really crap piece of hill ground somewhere u have to rent the same size as ur old farm) while the poor sods who bought or took over the lease have had to manage without any subsidy.
Compleltey wrong but just typical of the stupid legislation/rules that come out of government/civil servants offices, almost all a bunch f f**wits.


Had a right good blether with a head man on local fishery board this morning, really is scary wot there attempting to do with the fishery boards and very similar to the land reform, putting the SNP/Holyrood deeply invovled in every detail.

It is complete madness for government to be getting involved when at present these things are funded by private money, as Kahalri and others said, most upland estates lose money for fun. The more absentee land owners earning there living elsewhere the better as there the 1's with money to burn and are spending/investing it back on the estate as a tax dodge.
The only possible saving grace of SNP government is the silly money their throwing at renewables, be a few upland estates coining it in throu hydro power or wind mills. From the hill above my town on a good day could see 400+ turbines with a lot more on way and that is not a paticularly big hill, just completely crazy

He was also saying that when Holyrood was concieved/thought up it was never expected to have such a strong dominant party and was really designed to be a hung parliment, there is no 2nd chamber (hse of lords) or reviewing or watering down process so very easy to force legislation throu if they have the votes, which they do and i dread to think wot will happen next year if/when they get even more powerful
 
For my sins I have been involved with the local fishery boad for some 30 years.
Scarey you say, I have to agree, in fact I will go further, the wild scottish Salmon is finished.
I just hope I will not be here when it is listed as extinct!
The whole thing about the government involvment in wildlife management is getting stupid and its making real management harder by the minute.
 
Horrifying but fascinating. It's information like this that should be disseminated to those that think that the Scots would be rolling in oil money if they got independence.
 
Unfortunately those that think that will continue to think that no matter what.
The diehards who are able to understand it would consider it a price worth paying 'cos it'll all be alright...eventually....so they say.
It's a kind of "our grandchildren will thank us" thing :cuckoo:.

Well personally, I'm proposing a community buy out that shares the sporting interests of my local absentee landlord to me and my neighbours at the expense of the public purse.

Land reform, as it has been proposed in the last few days by the nutty nats WILL kill dozens of rural jobs. They know this...they've been told by everybody from the landowners to the gamekeepers, but the harsh truth is they don't care. They will abuse their majority to get their marxist way.

And as for the twaddle about the driving instruction industry somehow being a victim of the fabricated divide between Westminster and Holyrood??? What ARE you on?

Scotland is indeed doomed if it produces opinions like this.
 
Gerard did you miss the election mate your opinion was of a minority. There has been a divide longer that Holyrood time for change. I for one welcome it .
