LR Discovery Sport “Stalking” Mods

Cool thread, thanks for sharing. Freelander 2 owner here with lots of mods. Wouldn't be without it!

Had a friend buy a disco sport, and go back to a Freelander 2. He couldn't get on with how everything felt much "lighter weight" and not as well-built. Are you finding that?

I was musing on this on the way back from a successful stalk last night as I overtook a 14 plate FL2 on the M5. That's where I thought I'd go but Bristol's CAZ (think ULEZ) has made the Euro 6 dS a no brainer. It's more refined, economical and I can do all I did with the FL2 better - there's even more room in the back! It's much more refined and makes the FL2 seem very agricultural. Mine has to be a family car too so no truck like most and in part, I don't want one of those either really - I like driving a car. I love some of the whistles and bells (factory car play, heated and cooled seats, rear heated seats (keeps children happier), acres of leg room in the back, panoramic roof, etc) and, bar the worry in the back of my mind about the timing chain (mitigated by the sheer number of earlier 15-17 plate dS I see on the road), frankly I'm glad I changed. 🤗

Jeez I have been driving sheds for years then if you think the fl2 is agricultural. I think it is one of the nicest motors I have ever had. 😁
To be fair, the last motor cost £600 and lasted 3 years.

I have been looking at the DS but that 2 litre engine has such a bad reputation. It does seem that if it is used on long trips rather than a town car, they are a lot less likely to self destruct. But, I think I will stick with my fl2 for a few years, unless the lottery numbers come up.

My last f2 I had, I did nearly 100k miles in it with little trouble, then the front PTU spline went and I did another 5k in it FWD only. Recently an HSE the same colour 2 years newer with only 110k on the clock and good service history came up for 2.5k, rather than fix my old one, I bought the other and sold the old one without losing much money! A very worthwhile upgrade. Although the "new" one is an auto, and it doesn't do anywhere near as good on MPG as I could get out of the manual. The Auto box takes some persuading to get into 6th, where I drove the manual everywhere in 6th as long as I was above 30mph!

I'm aligned with what you say @wytonpjs about family car and truck in one. Mines the same. Whether it's camping holidays, airport runs, or shooting, it does it all and does it all well.

I have avoided buying a pickup by making a frame for mine that goes on a Dave Cooper bike rack on the tow-bar, so I can rifle shoot rabbits!! It's actually really comfy!

You have made me feel a little better about the inevitable DS upgrade, as I really don't know what else I would go for. Few more years left in the Freelander yet though!

Mine went circa 70k and my then local LR whizz quickly fixed it with a Bell exchange unit - sold the car at 135k with it still working perfectly. I have a whine on the dS and I’m wondering whether it’s the same…..it’s come on fairly rapidly and the car was never off-roading before I got it  May try the transmission flush and get a second LR opinion - sadly my local man is no more - he got fed up of JLR software and their support:(

That's good, my mate's PTU went at about 100k, firstly bell sent out a PTU with a faulty spline repair... the weld was horrendous. Then they said they would replace it after he sent pics, and it all measured up on some posh kit as he's a machinist. Then they sent the wrong replacement. 3rd time lucky and he got it fitted.
He's done 30k miles and It's now gone again. He's not impressed.

My bell rear diff was OK on the last one I had, though.
