Ugly Annealer - gas

Hi all - just gone to do some annealing. Would appear that although I can hear gas in the canister, there’s not enough to actually allow me to anneal. I wasn’t impressed at first then I thought I’ve probably done 150 x .308 cases and some 300 WM ones. Perhaps that’s the extent a 400g MAPP gas canister will do.
Before I scuttle up to Toolstation for another one, can anyone recommend a more economical way of providing gas to the machine ?
Is there a larger (not stupidly large) canister anyone can suggest which may prove better VFM ?

Nothing wrong with 400g bottle of MAPP.

I have been using mine for years now and have annealed many many more cases than you have done and I also use mine as an informal golf club builder, so I am constantly using it to loosen epoxy in golf shafts and to remove grip tape.

What sort of torch attachment are you using. You really want a pencil flame attachment rather than a massive brazing or vortex attachment, both of which concentrate heat on larger area of the case while also probably using more gas.

Less is more.

I should add, I do mine manually rather than using a machine as such, not that is should make much difference as far as i can tell.

I am using a ‘fine flame torch’ so I’m not putting out a huge flame to do the cases.

Hmm, not sure then. I mean a 400g bottle should last somewhere in the region of 5hrs of constant use (not that you would have it on that long. I don't keep a track of how much work mine does between replacement but I can say it does many hundreds if not a couple of thousand (I do about 100 cases in less than 15minutes) on top of using it for other non shooting applications.

I don't know what sort of attachment you are using or whether you have the flame cranked up to max which will use more gas obviously.

If you have done less than 500 cases, that can only be an hour or so of work. I would expect it to do 3 or 4 times as much as that at least. If you can hear gas in the bottle when you shake it, maybe the issue is something else other than running low on juice. Without seeing your set up or knowing what you are doing, I cannot really help any more. Sorry. Good luck.

I have been using my Vortex annealer for years, every time i reload, I have changed the twin tanks about 5-6 times

Mapp gas is the new kid on the block, it burns really hot, next is propane then butane. Propane will be fine to anneal some cases, it might take you another half a second, it’s cheaper too. If your doing loads a 5kg propane tank and the right regulator and hose will last you a loooong time.

It’s not the gas sadly.

Nipped up to Toolstation and bought another cylinder.
Weighed the new v old. Only 125 grams difference so there’s gas in the old canister.
For some reason the gas is not getting through the torch - tried old cylinder and new. Nothing’s happening.

A quick twirl with the spanner’s doesn’t show any obvious blockage so now I’m stumped.
Further enquiries in hand with a very helpful Mark from Derraco.

I get many hundreds of cases annealed with my Ugly and a single can of propane, 6.5/223 must have annealed north of 500 on the current bottle, it’s starting to feel a bit light, but no change on the flame over the last 150 annealed about 2 weeks ago👍🏻

Im fairly convinced now that the MAPP gas was contaminated with something as it managed to block the fine flame torch and the 1m gas line that fed it. Switched to propane and the torch works well. Need to source a good 1m gas line now so I can remote mount the bottle
