Help Save Canterbury's Heritage Streetlights

There is obviously no need to replace the iron post.

Pretty sure we do. It's a cottage industry sort of thing.

Hardly surprising. (Suppressing my non-PC views on the sort of man one finds working around airports and airlines)

i believe the issue relates to corrosion under the ground ?

but in all honestly i didn't really listen that closely

i think i was hungry at the time.....

Not sure on the specifics of these lights but there are certainly still quality foundries that can produce cast iron components. Also with correct maintenance cast iron will outlast galvanised steel products by multiple decades easily. The problem with most councils and public bodies in general is their maintenance of the public realm is non existent, they wait for problems to occur then fire fight with minor repairs until they can justify larger capital works ie ‘modernisation’.

I’m a blacksmith and see this all the time, live in a historic area and see contractors with no skill set or knowledge of historic built environment taking on works as the lowest bid on the tender. It’s a race to the bottom unfortunately.

I live fairly near Canterbury and was very annoyed to hear this on the news a couple of days ago. How on earth can it possibly be cheaper to replace these wonderful old lamps than refurbish them - madness!
Signed with pleasure.

Reform Council? Who have voted to do this? So like they said after the "Leave" vote it's a democratic decision. Get over it. But of course the folk that want these kept then will be the same folk moaning that Council Tax has gone up? Cost figures I have seen on the internet says new lamps cost £167. Replacement cast iron cost £3000. As other will confirm it is notoriously difficult to weld repair large cracked areas of cast iron. It can be done but not easily.

Those are obviously ludicrous made-up figures. Do you seriously think you can buy a lamppost and streetlight for £167?? Equally absurd is the idea that fixing cast iron lamps need cost that much. What has happened here is some philistine idiot in the council has had a "clever" idea and manufactured excuses and numbers to justify it.

Sorry but you are living in a country with the greatest debt in it history and you are all worried about street lights ? NZ sadly is in the same place in history, except the only way we are bringing down debt is by not spending on services we all need.

Three metre galvanised of like type as proposed by the Reform council:

Cast iron of the similar pattern to the Canterbury lamps the petition demands:

The issue is blown out of proportion. Cast iron columns that are corroded or cracked are being replaced with steel heritage columns, the same luminaire is being fitted and they are keeping roughly the same heritage aesthetic.

Kcc have confirmed that they’ve been replacing these for some time as they’ve been condemned without anyone passing comment, and it’s only blown up as one street needs seven done as no longer safe.

Isn't it sensible to use a cheaper steel heritage column that effectively look the same rather than a debt ridden council waste money casting new cast iron ones at greater expense.

Here's the story with the costings for the castings. I'd have assumed that these would be cast in green sand from sectional wooden patterns? I cannot see such patterns being that expensive? But, yes, the casting would be labour cost expensive as it'd be being done in the UK.

No!

The issues are a;- they are not the same and b;- meaningful maintenance/restoration is not being undertaken.

K,
Totally agree with you being a local to the CT postcode, it is sicking to see what has become of Canterbury it now appears to be a mix of Eastern European food shops, or vape/mobile repair centres!( don't get me started on the Deliveroo/drug mules zipping about!).

Its sickening that the only shops that thrive in any town are takeaways, barbors, salons and estate agents.
I would bet money more local care about these than lamp posts

You could probably buy a shitty plastic facsimile of it for £167

Signed. Good luck with this. Annoys the hell out of me when councils spend our money on nonsense and fail to look after our cultural heritage in their care.
