Help Save Canterbury's Heritage Streetlights

Its sickening that the only shops that thrive in any town are takeaways, barbors, salons and estate agents.
I would bet money more local care about these than lamp posts
And its those very "local" folk who are responsible for the demise of what we might call traditional High Street shops as they have forsaken such in favour of a;- on-line purchasing and b;- purveyors of obesity-hastening frothed cream coffee & cake!

Period and design correct Canterbury street lighting may well be a 1st World issue but IMHO we discount such aesthetic concerns at our peril in these dark and uncertain times!

Oh, we also need to ensure they are painted the correct shade of green!

I remember well campaigning against them replacing the old oil lamps lit by lamplighters and writing to Queen Victoria - with those new fangled "penny black" stamps - and someone wrote back telling me it was what the Council I'd democratically elected had democratically decided.

That and a scribbled note at the bottom that if the local dog walkers had not let their dogs **** on the bases of the posts that they wouldn't have deteriorated and needed replacing.

I suppose in modern times you could use the analogy of the Brexit referendum?

When I was in Leeds from 1976 to 1978 they still had gas lamps along Lyddon Terrace and as a result Yorkshire Television filmed a number of period dramas there. I think "Raffles" with Anthony Valentine being one. Ah. Memories.

And here's one that's still lit basically by the by products of shite:

Those lights were new and modern (and expensive and beautiful) at the same time as their surroundings, when the form of an item was as important as its function. Replacing them just because the council haven’t bothered their arses maintaining them properly isn’t what anyone should be promoting. I’m not for keeping old things just because they are old, but because they are an important part of built heritage and inherent to intangible cultural heritage of an area.

Very well put, Robgal.

It doesn't however surprise me that SD members are split on this matter as we oft' see a willingness to adulterate classic rifles with grotesque and non period correct scope rails and barrel cans.

K,
Totally agree with you being a local to the CT postcode, it is sicking to see what has become of Canterbury it now appears to be a mix of Eastern European food shops, or vape/mobile repair centres!( don't get me started on the Deliveroo/drug mules zipping about!).
If nobody would buy dope then they would not be there, said from one who was never stupid enough to try them.
Then again same councils happily force home owners to refurb their homes in grade II listed to a very expensive standard which they decide on, easy when its not your money.
